ZOMG if that chick that keeps on staring at you in English class catches wind that you're writing a paper on BMWs as status symbols, she'll rampage your loins like the wild animal that she is.

I drive a bmw because I appreciate quality.

I drive an E30 because I do not make enough money to drive an E31, or an E46.

I drive a BMW because for what I like in a car, they fit me all around (sport, build quality, luxury, and ruggeddness) Other cars are similar, but BMWs just suit me well all the way around.

Considering this whole topic is completely objective and based totally on personal opinion you should choose a different topic, BMW related or not.

That being said I drive an e30 because they're raw, fun to drive, and easy to work on. Plus they look awesome.

If you want quality then buy an e46, not an e31.
An e31 is the same as an e32 in terms of performance, handling, electronics, and drivelines types. They can be a nightmare to maintain.

I drive several BMW's because personally I really dis-like most of the American and Japanese makes in both style and build quality. I also think a lot of the new cars lose it somewhere. Take for example my daily beater is a 91 318. Runs great; great gas mileage, power everything 4 doors and it cost nothing. Plus in all reality it is not slow, insurance is cheap and if it does get in a wreck it is fairly easy to replace. I have owned new BMW's still own a Brand new Mercedes but I find myself hoping in the BMW and going places.

                    My two cents.

i think its very subjective. and like mentioned earlier, way way to broad a topic. take this thread over to BF, or M3forum. its likely you will get similar answers, BUT still. the enthusiast side is a niche. i would admit that the vast majority of bmw drivers are in it for that little roundel on the hood/trunklid, and that alone. mind you, they are NOT the enthusiasts by a longshot. your 'average' bmw driver couldnt tell you what an M car entails. they have no concept of what the company is about, nor its vast motorsport history. lets all be honest an E30, is not an E90. and never will be. ask an E90 owner what he/she thinks of an E30. i can almost guarantee they will ask, 'what is an E30?"

the initial beginning statement, 'All BMW drivers drive a BMW because of its status symbol' is obviously not true. thats like myself writing a paper with a statment, 'all corvette drivers are D-bags that have their heads in their arses.' just wont fly because, well, it's subjective first of all. secondly, it isnt the truth, so theres no point in arguing it as true (lol, it actually is true). may i suggest you revise your topic a bit?

i dont mean to sound like a critic, or a hater. no no no. just some constructive criticizm, and some food for thought.

You're asking this question on an e30 forum. Your answers will likely be different on a forum with people who own new cars. People drive e30's for the reasons mentioned - great, fun car that is easy to repair and inexpensive. Great quality, engineering etc.

If e30 owner's really cared about the status and what others thought, they would buy something newer with less quality and performance, but more status in others' eyes. For example, instead of paying 3 grand for an e30 and spending money modding, just get an early Z3 1.9 for about 8-10 grand. Still an affordable car, but it has mega status to the uninformed driving public because it's a convertible BMW.
