a friend who worked devops at amazon tells me it's *not* a good place to work, even at the engineer level.

I wouldn't know, I was merely checking salaries on Glassdoor to see what it would take to keep a comparable standard of living.

I was surprised to see the avg salary for my title in Seattle as a whole is literally only few % points higher than what I make here.

That title at Amazon was much more inline with the cost of living increase.

Really sucks that he's dead, as I enjoyed his stuff. If Mike Rowe passes somehow I'm moving to a cabin in the woods.
