Job change advice

Okay, looking for info and some personal experience stuff from all you IT and computer related fields. I have been in heavy construction since I was in high school (I started when I was 16, I am now 26). I like what I do but I just need to move on, and the computer thing intrigues me enough to consider it as a full time job. I would like to just get some ideas of what you guys do on a daily basis. Also some disadvantages and advantages.

I was in IT up until I moved in August. I dealt with confused people wondering why their printer wasn't working, wrote up technical documents and I was in constant contact with our cellular and internet contractors (they learn to hate you as much as you hate them).

It can get kind of monotonous if you're not really into it. I didn't mind it.

It's pointless, boring, and pretty much mind-numbing, but the pay is decent. I don't really work hard at it. I actually think heavy construction would be fun.

Well what I do is fun (pipe and dirt work) but dirty and hard on the body. I have 2 bad knees now (fom cave in's) and tennis elbow just starting up form it, along with general pains from a physical job.

Yeah, extremely broad. IT could be working at a help disk telling people how to work their computers, or consulting with different corperations and implementing computing solutions.

Tell them promote you to foreman so you can point your finger and get paid bucks.

IT has become a very saturated market.. You need a 4 year degree to start making a decent wage and good job experience is what you really need to get into most of good positions that don't include being on a phone all day.

I've been in IT since I was 19. Now I'm 25, I work as an IT Technologist for UTK and run a small computer repair business out of my home. It's really beginning to get boring and monotonous. I'm looking more toward engineering and fabrication or starting a different kind of business. I haven't even finished my IT degree and I'm beginning to think it would be a good idea to change my major before it's too late.

808, a working foreman only makes a few K (less then 5) a year more than I do where I am at now, and I would still have to keep on doing what I am doing now plus all the bull shit paper work and PR. I have allredy thought of that.

Moving into IT isnt easy anymore unless you have higher education. It used to be guys could get into entry level phone-tech jobs but those are all in Banglapour now.

All of those certification programs are bullshit, nobody will hire someone that just has certs. You either need college or experience first.

Yeah. I've been in the IT fireld for close to a decade now.

You have to be on top of your shit to make it anywhere and have a real strong sense of logic and skill, not much a degree can help you with. You have to be mentally trained for it.

I'll give you some salary ranges from my company to give you an ideal of what some of the higher end companies will pay you:

Systems Engineers: 50-75k + stock

Network Engineers: 75-100k + stock

Sr. Programmers: 100k-130k + stock

Make sure you really like it and are really good at it before you commit.
