rant: dumb cheap friends with busted cars

cliffnotes: i am annoyed by my friend who buys a $300 and wants help fixing it but doesn't want to spend any money to do so

friend buys a 86 4000 quattro for $300... because it is such a deal. I look at him like he is crazy and into masochism. Why the hell would anyone want an AUDI that old... anyway,

He replaced the spark plugs when he got it, and then used some fuel injector cleaner and all is going fine.

Then he accidently fills up with regular instead of premium and sometime there after, it won't rev past 3K while driving.

I ask him if he has checked the spark plugs, and he replies,
"Nah they are new man! I bought the sweet Bosch 4+"
"New since you got the car, or since the gas accident"
"I got them just after the car"
"Well, you need to check and probably replace them"
"Dude, they are $6 bucks each! that's like... ... $30 bucks, I could buy more hookah stuff with that!! and I'm broke."

continues on... he is completely incapable of using any sort of intelligence to find the first resources on audis, or search well on them. I put in a good search and find the exact information I need on the same forum he was trying to use and got nothing.

I advise him that he should probably replace the Manifold Pressure Sensor since that makes sense for the issue he is having and it's only $115.

He doesn't want to replace it if it is not bad.
He also doesn't want to do the fuel filter.
Nor anything else that could be the problem and a good maintence item regardless.

And he doesn't have motronic 1.3 which would tell him what was the issue at hand  I swear my next car will be a 96+ just for the ease of OBD-II diagonistics.

So he is going in to the dealer, going to have them look at this piece of shit... which two doors cannot be opened from inside and one cannot be opened from the outside, and have them guess at the problem, but not pay to replace anything that isn't the problem.

and the real catcher is... he wants his parents to pay for a PAINT JOB for his birthday/christmas.

Doesn't surprize me, fortionately friends of mine have maintaince as top priority. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, they'll do maintaince that isn't even due yet and leave the car looking like total crap. XD

They don't let them down though...

I can see where you are coming from as I feel similar. People who don't want to spend a little money to fix their car and make it nice but would rather spend money on unneeded things like paint make me sick.

This is why my car may not look amazing, but it runs like a top with no problems what so ever.

I would drive it until it shits out on him... then sell it for $300.

I'm not going to say anything, because I was sooo cheap with my Merc 300e, that I would get the cheapest of everything, even oil. Thats when I changed the oil, it leaked so much, that I stopped bothering since it always had fresh oil. When the trunk latch broke, 2 sheetmetal screws solved the problem, I just had to carry a screwdriver w me to open the trunk. Lets see what else..... Hood latch was a coat hanger, as was the antenna. Power seat button was a paper clip jammed in there, etc.

Man, I loved that car for $500. Drove it for a year, put less than $100 into it other than fuel, and then sold it for $1000.

yeah, i probably wouldn't care if he didn't come to me and ask for help. And then me not being able to have the problem fixed since he doesn't want to buy anything for his POS.

his main whine is that his car tops off at 55mph and he takes a 70mph road back to visit his parents. If he would just check the plugs and maybe replace them, put more fuel injector cleaner in, and replace the manifold pressure sensor - i think it would be running like an old top again

it's not the car's fault really - no electronics ordeals, just a silly driver who I have to listen to while he has the power to help himself

                            Exactly.

Most of my friends drive E36's lol, and aren't cheap with maintanance. We are very lucky to have an excellent mechanic in Toronto, knows his shit, works fast and is relatively cheap!! I do all my own work anyway.

                            Keep it slideways!!

Yeah, I understand why you give a fuck Lance_Entities. You want to try to help your friend, but he won't listen to what you're saying, either because he thinks you're wrong, or doesn't want to spend the money. I run into this with some of my friends and family all the time, from cars to computers.

For example, my friend recently bought a 2003 Yamaha scooter. He's wanted one for a long time, which is fine, but the problem is he lives in a place that snows from November to February, and a scooter is pretty worthless in the snow. For half the price he paid for his scooter, he could have fixed his car up, which is just sitting in his driveway not running. I asked him why he didn't fix the car to use in the winter.

"Well, scooters are cheaper in the winter."
"Didn't you buy it from a friend?"
"Yeah...but I mean, it'd be cheaper if I bought it now."
"But why would your friend raise the price four months from now? He's not even using it."
                              "..."

Sometimes, you've just got to let it go.
