    Computer Audio Question

So here is my setup. I've got the coaxial digital output of my sound card connected to my surround sound receiver. The coaxial jack is the WAV output under the volume controls.

I want to connect something to the line input on my computer and have it play out to my receiver. Right now, I can record on the line input, but it doesn't output through the coaxial jack unless I play back the recording. Is there a setting for this somewhere that I can't find?

WAV is usually uncompressed, so this why you can not loop thru and only play back works. There may be some sound cards out ehre that will allow this!

Sorry, Tyler. You are not even close.

It is actually much simpler that that.

Your sound car does not convert (the signal) to digital until the audio leaves the sound card. So, if you "loop through" the audio never has the chance to be converted to digital, thus no output through your TOSLINK optical connection.

I wonder if it would work to have 2 sound cards (or onboard) so that the two must connect digitally? That should force the "input" card to convert, then the "output" card should send it out in digital.

BTW, Andrew...when you are using the PC, does your reciever show what mode you have? Do you get DD, PCM or DTS, or all 3? Does it show sampling rate, etc? I assume you are using Audigy2 sound card.

My old MSI motherboard has a daughtercard that does optical. MSI was really cool and sent me one free! I have just never used it...yet.

I would be interested as well what mode the receiver picks the digital signal.

Do you have a digital in, I am pretty sure your sound card will not act as an A/D converter, but if it had a Digital in it may allow you to buy a small A/D convertor. But why process any of this through the Sounds card unless you are doing production work.

Do you have nero wave editor installed ?

If you press record, it will play what you are recording, I think you could try that to play through your card. This should play your line input, but through the speaker plug jack of your sound card, never tried it on a coaxial or rca output.

PC sound cards are EXACTLY A to D and D to A converters...all of them.

That is the entire issue, that the audio has not been converted to Digital, thus no digital output.

Luke, I have exactly what you described. A MSI Mobo with on board audio and what is called an "S-Bracket" that has a optical and coaxial digital output and two analog line outputs used for a center speaker and a subwoofer.

My receiver says "PCM 48" when playing the computer. In the mixer settings on my computer, I can select whether I want to output 44.1KHz or 48KHz.

I'm sad though. :( The "something" I was hooking up to the line-in was my Staples Easy Button. I modified it so I can output the sound of it through a mono RCA cable. I was hoping to run it through the surround sound so I would have Easy Button 5.1. lol :) Oh well.

                Thanks for the help!

Andrew, since you have the same or similar Mobo...could you do me a favor?

Would you go to www.pcpitstop.com and check your HD throughput on their site? My old 40GB 7200 RPM ATA100 WD HDD was making a bunch of noise, so after checking firmware, re-formatting, updating, all of the usual crap it was STILL 19Mb/sec. So, I bought another WD HDD. 300GB, 7200 RPM, ATA100. Getting the exact same noises, same speeds.

                  I think I will try a PCA ATA133 card...just like the old days of UDMA/ATA66 on a OC'd 440BX PIII Slot 1 POS.

But I would like to know what you are hitting before I spend more dinero.

Wish I had gone SATA and a card first.

                  Luke
