Houton TX people, help a brother out

I need some input. Where should a single 29 year old guy live in houston? I will not know anyone and want to be near a nightlife (bars and such, you know, stuff to do) I will be renting an apartment for the 1st year down there. I've heard the galleria, downtown, heights, medical center..
Givem e some pointers as to where NOT to live and where the action is hehe.

galleria is downtown, which is near everything

woodlands is nice a little more expensive and more upscale

pretty much wherever you are in houston you are gonna be around everything, its a huge city

i live in zip code 77073, near spring i think in nw houston, we are like 10 15 minutes from downtown and right by the woodlands

i hear the more south you go in houston the more slummy it gets
