at 21-22yrs old is it wrong to ask for gifts?

I could use some nice pots and pans, and a good set of knives. Maybe some gift certificates to Nordstroms for some business clothes. I work, go to school, pay my rent, insurance, gas, etc, but just don't have extra to buy things I could really use.

My family every year gets me things for christmas that i absolutely can not use. Last year I put my gifts in a big bag and dropped them off at the homeless shelter.

    yes? no?

Make an Amazon.com wish list and send it to everyone you know. You are probably getting things you can't use/don't like because everyone doesn't know what to get you. Making a Christmas list is helping them out IMO.

I think it depends on your family. My Ex-mother-in-law (out-law?) always included the "Gift Reciept" in her gifts and expected her gift to returned. Her attitude was that "the thought is what counts". Oddly enough, she got me terrific gifts!

Personally, I basically hate the whole gift giving ordeal. That is a tradition for little kids, IMHO.

I give it a thumbs up. You are asking for practical things, and not outlandish high $$$ items. If you were asking for a PS3, and a Hi-def TV, I'd say otherwise.

My family is the same, but Mom is awesome about keeping gift receipts = I can take it back and get something I need.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

As a gift giver, I tend to like a little direction so I'm not shooting in the dark...so yeah, if your family intends to give you gifts, I don't think you'd be overstepping your bounds to make some subtle suggestions.

I hate that soooo much. People give me stuff I will never ever use in my entire life and it just builds up in my closet.

and I can't just say "don't get me anything" because no one will hear it, I hate the obligation of HAVING to get someone a gift. I would be much happier with maybe getting 2 gifts total of something I need or can actually use instead of like 10 things that I am never going to use ever. Just a waste of money.

Ever since I turned 16 though it was better, people would ask me what I want and I always said the same thing like I don't really want or need anything, so they get me a gas card. I love gas cards because I always need gas!

Oh, I think I am pretty good at giving useful gifts too :)

Right now on my shopping list is to get my sister a new door for her jetta lol, she had a small fender bender (her fault) but there was no damage to the other guys car so they didn't report it.

People always say the best gift is something you would like for yourself, and I think a new door would be kickass! lol

when I shop for people I get them things they can use. For my dad i get him starbucks or peets cards or gift certificates to get coffee beans at a local roaster. He is into barbeque so i might get him a new set of bbq tools. My mom loves french stuff so i might get her a french cd or a jazz cd since she likes jazz. my bro loves anything WWII so i go to the surplus place and pick him out something weird like WWII matches in a bag or something. people in my family are way to lazy at picking out gifts.

for example, someone got me ornaments one year, another books I won't read, I don't read sci-fi, if you want to buy me a book get me something to do with cars, the economy, or the stock market. wtf, ornaments are you serious? get me that shit when i'm married and have a tree, lol.

What's the point in suprising someone with something they don't want?
