Because when a spring is cut, it's the same as shortening a torsen bar, the car has less leverage on the spring. Think of a bar that's 10ft long and you push on it, now shorten it to 7ft and it seems to stiffen up...it's harder to push down. Now wind that 7ft bar into a coil and you have a spring. For the most part "purpose built" springs are progressive which means they're intended for street use, not so much handling (but are a vast improvement over stock). Alot of books on racing actually suggest cutting a spring over buying aftermarket progressive springs.
This is his explaination of why he cut his springs. Am I completely off base or does this just not make any sense whatsoever? I've been trying to get my head around his logic but I just can't. Anyone want to explain this to me please?

I think he ment "I am too cheap to buy new springs for $400 and too poor to buy a used set at about $150, so I cut my springs."

But I am right in thinking that his "scientific" explaination has no bearing on reality whatsoever? When I read that I had these sudden flashbacks of airplanes and conveyor belts...

I am nervous to see his "barely any rust" under the rocker panels.

In the midwest, You see so many cars with body kits... for a reason. And "Barely any" for indiana, equals "catastrophic" to Californians.

Seriously though, he's wrong about the spring rate thing, right? My sense of logic says yes but I'm not totally sure...

old thread, but thought those who might remember him would get a laugh:

                a thread of sensational proportions...

I'm not here to start more problems, but this thread was brought to another thread of mine on a local car forum by an annonymous user. This is my explanation copy and pasted about the loan for wanting to part the car, flame it, agree with it, whatever. I'm trying not to be the same person i was two years ago.

I made a thread on parting my car out to try to get money to help pay off my debt and i was flamed for really no good reason. I ask the legality of parting a car with a loan on it, i get flammed about my life. Whatever, no one on the board knows my situation, my credit isn't at risk, morality is at risk. My mom (thankfully) would do anything possible for me and has offered to completely pay my Audi off for me. The morality is, i don't want her to, it's not her responsibility because she was nice enough to co-sign the car for me, i can't let her take a hit and pay off the car (though she suggested it and would be more than happy to). So excuse the guy that PM'd me asking about the car and i tried negotiating with him. His intent i know was to flame me, that's why he posted our conversation in the thread that i turned down throwing in the A8L wheels in with the deal and would not negotiate at all with me. I offered to drop the price even further and he made it clear he wanted the A8L wheels even after i dropped the price enough for him to damn near buy his own set. I'm taking thousands in a loss and i'm not at the point that i have to get rid of things i really want to save my credit. If i were on my own and my mom wasn't happy to help me out, yeah, i'd throw those wheels in with the deal and let it go for the exact pay off on the car. Parting it out isn't the best idea, i checked the prices on the parts for these cars after making the thread, in the past month, prices fell fast. I won't be able to make pay-off parting it out, i've gotten another job starting in November to get payments made, but the car will still be for sale. I don't want $211 a month payments anymore.

If i did part the car, i get to continue the loan for 5 years. It's a flat interest rate, meaning if i pay it off now, i still pay the interest for 5 years. That being the case i would've liked to get money from parts out of this car and put it in my savings account so i don't have to worry about coming up with payments and use some of the loan money to buy an economic car. The car does need some work before a serious buyer does buy it. A/C doesn't work, i have central door issues, the front hub is getting replaced soon, i damaged it trying to remove the worn out upper ball joints. Instead of spending the money to maintain it and still get the same price out of it, i was considering parting it because a month or so ago, the tranny and engine would damn near get my pay-off (that's no longer the case).

As far as the spring comments, i've put H&R race springs on the car, cost wasn't the factor (back then anyway). It's that i've now been working on making the car a proper built car for tracking. Cutting the springs does work like i mentioned, but there is down sides, the rates get a tad uneven (as do progressive springs though! [which H&R race are not progressive]). That was my reason for cutting them though, the ride was decent and i was going for looks with a stiffer ride to keep from rubbing, i had no reason to spend the $400 i did on the race springs back then.

I said 3/4 of a quart (as in a fraction of a quart) is the amount of oil it burns in two months BTW, not 3-4 quarts, that would be ridiculous. I've owned very few cars that didn't lose about a quart inbetween every oil change. That motor was very fresh, i pulled it apart and it still had honing marks on the cylinders. Still working on getting it back in the car, i need to get financially back on my feet before i can get it back in (and thank god i'm getting a good paying job coming in November).

I do appologize for my past, i've grown up some, but i do still have my old self here. Take me or leave me, but i did like this forum, it's just i have problems explaining myself and it for some reason comes off as me looking retarded. It's like people take what i say completely out of context.

So how about Tim Skold joining Marilyn Manson? Now that we're talking about KMFDM.

Eh, not anything i really care about anymore. I haven't kept up with Marilyn Manson since Mechanical Animals or kept up with KMFDM since the "Symbols" album that my username was based from.

I moved from spending my time going to shows and concerts to cars when i got my license.
