I will not change my mind on this, if I had the choice of an M10 or an M30 sitting in front of me, with all the turbo parts at my disposal, it would still be a no brainer!

A bunch of people on the board have read Maximum Boost by Corky Bell... Those who have should be able to see why I'm questioning this. Mr. Deagle is running a 304 cam and wants to push 2 bar of boost. I'm not arguing that it wont make the power, but driving it is gonna be a bitch compared to a 315rwhp M30!! From a drivavility standpoint alone, I bet if you had two identically prepared chassis with adequate sized tires and you put a turbo M10 in one, a turbo M30 in the other, both making close to the same amount of power, the M30 would walk away from it on a twisty road because of the flexibility of the torque curve.

It's easy to see how hard it would be to drive a car fast, smooth, and safe with a torque band that is 2000rpm wide, whereas a turbo M30 that makes over 300rwft/lbs from 2000 to 6000rpm would be much easier. Not to mention that the turbo on the M30 isn't going to have to work as hard, it's got more gas flowing through it to spool up quick, and it's pushing less than half the boost to make the same power... If you could easily fit 265s on the rear of an E30, it would be safer and easier to drive with a peaky, small displacement, high boost motor. But since you can't, that's something to take into consideration! Traction issues on boost don't generally help you when you are trying to blast around a corner. Unless you are a drifter...

    My mind is made up!

I'm glad for Mr. Deagle, he's gonna have a sweet E30 with that boosted M10, I'm just questioning the logic because I don't know if he plans on auto-x, trackdays, drag racing, or just fucking around on the street.

Get a turbo M30, you will make more power per dollar, pump less boost (by a lot) and it will all happen under 5500rpm. There are some dyno sheets on mye28 right now showing 12psi pushing 315rwp and 345rw ft/lbs. You might come close to the horsepower, but it will be at 25psi and driving it will be unpleasant.

Or stick to your turbo m10, rev it out to 8k, make 300rwp and 180ft'lbs of torque... It's cool, it will be fast, but it won't be "Holy fuckin shit this is fast" fast.

Mike, none of this is aimed at you, well... not most of it, I like you

But Mr. Deagle needs to read some fucking books so he realizes that a turbo M10 is NOT the shit.
hahaha you need to meet otis. he will change your mind

I ended up using the cluster from my 318i with my 325e coding plug, and a 150 mph speedo, so now i have a working tach

    edit: thread finished

The link seems to be down now.

I don't know what the tach looks like, but In my head all I can picture is a huge 10" rice guage.

I also don't know why people feel the need to replace the stock tach when they can't even max out what they got (I did read you were going to 8k, just wanted to input that)

I don't care how many RPM's I needed to read I don't think I would ever put in a top dash mount tach.

If you actually are going to hit 8k then I guess you do need something more adequate. If this were my car I would just hunt an e30 m3 tach down (or the whole cluster) Nothing beats OE, just swap the tach thing (Can't think of the term for that white plug) over.

    Just my two cents.

And fyi, your reading skills are no better than anyone elses here, otherwise you'd know my twisties are a thing of the past.

I do not have a problem with a car with a stock ride height, but if you're going to be getting 317hp (oh, my bad...) 318hp out of that thing you'll really want to do some suspension work. Hence my comment about your monster truck...

If you can't afford to fix the tach, then you can't afford to own a car.
