It all depends... the only beef with drifting is that its highly subjective and it leaves room for bias.

I know D1 judges base on the following:
- Length of drift (from entry to exit)
- Amount of throttle (the point is to never have to lift the throttle... this is where AE86s score big points)
- Angle.

Formula D judges already have an american-ized corrupt system and according to G4TV (worst show ever) they go by the following:
- Speed
- Angle
- Line
- Overall excitement (of the crowd)

Exit speed isnt as important as all the rest, because the whole point is to have the speed before the exit. If you have speed during entry and the apex... the exit speed will just become a byproduct.

Smoothness is something I've always been debating myself.... they say that smoothness is a factor, however you always see those big shot drifters (Ken Nomura for one) that have some radical snap entries.... it doesnt look very smooth, but it looks awsome... and he gets points for it.

And there's always the factors that people swear dont affect judging, but it does. Stuff like tire smoke, bodykits, lights (oh especially neons and strobe kits), and whatever else they can throw on to put on a better visual show.

Like I said... it's a highly subjective sport.

I went to a formula D event this summer they judged on Angle, Entry Speed, Exit Speed, with tandom how close you can stay to the persons bumper, maintaining a drift, ect. It was really fun to go the event. I personally am not big into drifting, but watching the pros was a blast. I am going this year too.

A NOPI licensing event I participated in a few weeks ago judged on distance from predetermined clipping points as well as other things mentioned above.

good insight, i was wondering about the smoothness because i think the snap is pretty sick especially when you snap and then catch it.. just awesome, and the whole thread started after i watched your video Eric.
