Want to be a BMW tech? Info inside.

Don't fucking do it. I am rather intelligent, or at least capable of doing anything I need to accomplish a given task, but for some reason I chose to be a tech. My thought process was, " I don't really want to go to college, don't know what I want to do." Therefore, I quit the engineering program at NC State and went through BMW step. I have been at the dealer over a year now and god damn does it fucking suck. Maybe its just dealers in the South and backwards thinking, such as,

Go to get parts, parts personnel "It's only (insert day of the week here) slow down." followed by mindless bullshit about what they did last night.

It is not that I am getting shitty hours I average 60 a week working only 35 to 40 but I am hitting my head up against a fucking wall because of the inefficiency of others at my workplace. The reason YOU do not want to be a tech is that other than salesmen, the only people paid off hours turned/and or commission are Service Advisors. Which will make twice as much as you and never go home with aching backs/hands etc. God damn im a fucking moron. Yet, I bitch about this on a forum. fuck me

A BMW tech can make over $100k in a year. I know many that have. I know that it does suck at times being a tech. I am 19 and have worked at Herb Chambers BMW for almost a year and some stuff just sucks balls. It is not for everyone, I know that I am not doing it much longer for other reasons. I enjoy it and will work on any of my cars anytime, this line of work is just not a career for me.

You just need to chose the career that is right for you. There is nothing wrong with being a tech, that is just your opinion. Your dealer sounds like it is retarted. Try and maybe get a job somewhere else, but it sounds like the physical aspect of the job is hard on you as well.

I work at a body shop in the summer time and on breaks. I could NEVER do it for the rest of my life. It would drive me crazy. I am currently enrolled at Western Washington University studying engineering.

This is one of the very reasons why I don't want to do it for the rest of my life. You would be beat at 50 and you can't retire then. Also flat rate can make or break you. I hear master techs saying that it is no guarentee that they can pay all the bills. That coming from them scares me.

"pay all the bills" Funny thing is, every tech I know has a bunch of shit "toys" they dont need.

Im in STEP right now, and really love it. I only plan to do dealership work for a few years to pay off my loans and shit, then hopefully go to and independent shop/race prep type of work. This is just one chapter in this we call life.

I work at an independent that specializes in BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and Audi. I much prefer it to dealership work, no warranty hassles, and a much more streamlined staff. I work in a very unique shop though because we won't work on older cars, or anything that hasn't been taken care of. This means most of the cars I deal with are fairly easy. Add to that that my service writers kick ass and the company owner is just plain cool and I have no real reason to complain.

Start your own shop, people might appreciate a bit of honesty from a bmw dealer in their area (it would be a nice change imho)

I just have no desire to do what I do for a hobby as a living. I'm sure I would end up hating it.

Besides that, most of the people that start going off about how they want to be BMW Techs have this delusion that they're going to always be working on cars that are owned by people like us. WRONG. 99% of the cars you're going to be working on are either owned by complete assholes or total fucking idiots who don't even give a fuck about the car, they just drive it because of the name.
