    Titling a car?

If I were to buy a car, and the title is signed over to my name, Do I have to take it to the county clerk for licenseing? or can i re-sell the car without that.
    Is there any bypass?
Im not looking to cheat out of paying the taxes, just the trip to the emissions tester and the county clerk.

It varies from state to state, but here in NC- as in most states (AFAIK), what you want to do is illegal.

Now, I'm pretty sure people do it all the time, but it's still against the rules, if not the law.

If you're a dealer, it's a different story- they can do what you want to do, but they are supposed to keep records of vehicles they have in inventory and pay taxes on them that way.

You can typically sell a car once the PO has signed it over to you .

This varies from state to state though .

Does your title have multiple seller/buyer sections on the back ?
If yes then you can do it no problem .

Most states have a time requirement fo you to tag the car in your name .

But most of us will run on the old tags in the PO name and thats whats illegal technically .

Pretty much you are screwing your county and state out of their tax revenue .

Did they date the title? or did they just sign it? Or did you fill in your name on the title? If they only signed it with no date, most people just resell the car to the next buyer. It maybe illegal but alot of people do it and no one really cares.

Yeah that is the smart way to do it .

All of the cars I buy from individuals are signed over this way and the "buyer" slot is left empty .

unfortunately, as much as i wish he had done that, he didnt. :(
is there a way to keep the current title sheet instead of the clerk sending for a new one and waiting 8 weeks?

It sounds like you'll have to go ahead and send the title in and get it in your name. Unless you have a dealers licence and could sign it off that away.

I just looked on the back of my PA,IL,MD titles. All of the extra slots are for dealers. I'm guessing TN is the same way.

Yeah its called title jumping. The PO signs the title and you do not. You in turn sell the car before you register it. It's legal in NJ I believe.
