Goto a local store..and play some, or take a friend who playes. Go listen to different guitars/pickups and amps. I am sure you will find a combo you like. Even if you are buying used, get a good idea of sound with new gear.

What amp would you recommend for my studio? Buddy of mine uses a fender prosonic swears by it.

Depends totally on your style of music. I never though Fender made a decent amp. I used to have some. I am a very big Mesa/Boogie fan and have two myself. These are kinda expensive however. I can get almost any type of sound ever required.

Certainly, buy tube. period. tube. period. tube. period.

Maybe we will never agree on guitars but amps is another story. I love the Mesa Mark Iv. Mesa stuff is expensive but worth it. One side note. Mesa puts high wattage speakers in their amps so if you want to distort the speakers at a lower volume for blues and rock tones getting some different speakers will help the mesa's out a lot. The standard speakers in the mesa are tough and will last forever but thats about all I can say about them.

If your set on a Gibson (or any expensive guitar) look at a bunch of them. Not all Gibsons are created equal. Check for paint and finish. Orange peels in the paint. Intonation problems, warped necks, scratchy pots, thats all I can think of at the moment. This is true for many expensive guitars BTW. Guitar quality control isn't the best and expensive guitars get out with flaws, serious ones at times. Just don't get all gitty in the store and end up buying a 4000 dollar piece of shit cause it can happen. If you like one Les Paul in a store and it sounds pretty good play all of them in the store cause there might be one that sounds better.

Also pickups do effect sustain. If you position a pickup low it will sustain less then a pickup closer to the string. So as far as the amp is concerned. I don't believe that a glue in neck will sustain longer then a bolt on. As said earlier wood type has more to do with it. A guitar with a heavy headstock made out of say mahogany (Gibson) will sustain better then a maple (Fender) neck guitar. Anyway who cares about sustain. When is the last time you held a single note for 30sec? Its pretty low on my list of guitar sound preferences.

Well, speakers are not supposed to distort. They are designed to produce sound at all pressure levels. Speaker distortion is a very nasty distortion, and will lead to blowing them out. Distortion should only be caused by the amp, nothing else.

I think you mean that there are different speakers that can handle different wattage loads, ment for different levels and different sounds. Mesa/Boogie generally uses high wattage handing Celestions. In my DC-5 (similar to the Mark IV) I use a Celestion "Greenback" which is really only ment to handle "25 watts" but has a very smooth sound that is great for jazz and blues. However, in my big cab, I kept the high wattage handling speakers.

I guess you don't play blues.

No I really meant speaker distortion. Guitar speakers distort and it sounds good. Guitar speakers distort and are in fact designed to distort. I'm not lying do a google search. Speaker distortion is a big part of why tube amps feel different then solid state. The distorting speaker reacts with the distorting power valve and transformer in interesting ways. Ever wonder why an amp sounds so different when you attenuate the amp? Its because the speaker is a important part of the distortion equation. If you cut the power to the speaker you take out that extra level of distortion. Speaker distortion reacts with tube distortion and vise versa. Home audio speakers aren't supposed to distort because they are supposed to reproduce a sound. Guitar speakers are made to distort because your creating that sound. None of this applies to Jazz and other styles where you want a clean sound, but for rock hell yeah those speakers distort.

You don't mean a real type of distortion. Speakers color sound -- which is the "distortion" you are referring too.

Speakers affect the amp through load, impedence. Not through their own distortion.

Just for grins (because I know I am right)...I searched. Nothing. I think you have a misunderstanding of guitar amps and how true distortion is made. Speaker distortion is when a speaker cannot operate correctly, which damages a speaker. This is not want you want for metal, jazz, or anything else. This is bad.
