"Scientists calculate that average temperatures on the surface of the planet should be around 32 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Mayor says that is a friendly environment for liquid water and maybe even life."

lol what a big gap in temp!

I mean these guys supposedly have found a planet similar to earth...but they claim that it would take 1000 years to get there. Yeah, right.. OK!

Thats like when I was in the 7th grade and I told everyone I had a girlfriend but she goes to a different school. Or like how I would brag to my friends in high school that I drove the vette today but they weren't around to see it.. Or when I got kicked out of college for a semester but I told my friends that I was on the road on tour with Journey as a backup singer but I got bored with that and decided to go to europe with John Cougar Mellencamp as one of his roadies.

This is pretty much what I was hinting at. The fastest theretical ship we have travels at .5c (theoretically) which still takes us 200 years to get there, it also has no way of slowing down.

Furthermore, this planet is 5x as massive as earth which is ~2.25g which would not support long-term human life, especially if you had any heart problems, its just too much physical strain outside of our normal bodies to handle for long.

                Nifty discovery, useless application.

You're thinking too anthropocentrically. Scientists are saying that there is a very good chance it has water. Being that life appeared on our planet a very short time after water first appeared, they believe that there is a possibilty that this planet may have life. I understand that the probability of this is probably remote, but I still think it is worth investigating.
Even finding microscopic life or small sea creatures would be very profound. The realization that we aren't as unique and special as we thought we were would change humanity, and I believe it would be the better.

Or if they have ray guns and want to kill us and take our resources that could also be ok and unify us as a species to crush zem. AMIRITE?

I wouldn't count on it based on how massive the planet is.

how would it change humanity other then realizing there is life (or the possibility of life) on another planet? It's not gonna change a thing other then perhaps throwing Millions of dollars at the space program.

We know what was going on 20 years ago, there. Maybe they would think all the e30s are brand new, they would not even know about plastic bumpers yet!

Gravity has nothing to do with life. Fish live in a 0g environment, we live in a 1g environment, why couldn't life exist in a 2g environment?
