Start > Run > type 'msconfig' > click "Start Up" tab > disable all - restart.

There was once an etiquette to writing software and the installation utilities. Now people take advantage of setup utilities to load a lot of what I would consider optional stuff. A ton of stuff is web enabled and searchs for updates when you execute the application. They also load a ton of fonts. In the old days of slow processors, low memory and hard drive capacity, the exe file would load and call dll's or dependendencies as needed. Now they just throw all of that stuff in there. Photoshop and InDesign especially take forever to load. Sometimes you can modify the settings after installation but not always. The stuff that loads itself at startup is particularly rude.

Yeah, thats part of the reason why I don't update my Adobe Acrobat Reader. They always want to install the yahoo tool bar and a bunch of other crap that I don't need and don't want.

And then when I went to fix my cousin's computer, (he is 15) I had to uninstall a bunch of stuff that was preventing me from getting to the root of the problem. He must have had about 257 instant messaging programs that all wanted to open at the same time. So as I was uninstalling all of this crap, some of the programs had a popup window asking me why I wanted uninstall their program. I mean its rude enough that the installation is predispositioned to auto start every time you boot the PC but then to ask my WHY I dont want their program any more is even more rude.

Along with Ad-aware SE, I recommend you get AVG anti-spyware (it's free).

How many processes is your computer running?

PLease pres ctrl-alt-del then go to processes and count them, you should not have more than 24 running.

the go start - run - cmd there type "netstat -a" (without thw quotes) and count your internet connections wothout internet explorer running, or a p2p software BTW.

if you have any, each of those is spyware.

Download avg anti spyware or spybot search and destroy, and if you have the panda antivirus get rid of it.

Download free antivirus and malware protection. Tune up your PC, Mac, & Android. Encrypt your connection and browse anonymously with a VPN.

Also check your processor fins and see they are clean with no dust or hairs, temp will slow down your pc.

A knowledgeable friend could do that for you even from his house using remote help through windows (via messenger).

please relax, your computer should take 30 seconds to a minute to load windows xp, not 5. ;)

Actually I do not have any spyware issues and I am only running between 16 to 18 processes at any given time. There really isn't anything wrong with the PC itself. Its just the bargain brand software that I am using that tends to give me a hard time.
