I don't really like nascar. But i do like to watch some of the races from 1987 and back (when they was real cars) like 64-71 when Mopar had the HEMI's in them.
NASCAR goes DTM!

I'd say Nascar teams figured out wings a long time ago. The spoiler setup they ran from the mid 70s until now was mandated by Nascar and designed to slow the cars down, basically to act as a big air brake. The teams worked around it, and designed the suspension setups on the cars such that they were extracting a lot of performance out of that rear setup, even with its less than ideal design.
The new "Car of Tommorow" chassis redesign that you see in those pics is designed to get around the suspension setups that the teams have been running the past 6-7 years. They've gone to what is called a "coil bind" setup that puts so much front travel on the nose of the car, that it just sits on the front valence and grinds it down, completely sealing off the front end. This makes for a very fast race car, but basically sets it up so that it can only run one line (or "groove" if we're talking nascar-speak). This makes the cars very aero-dependant, and results in the same problems that F1 has been dealing with for 12-15 years, cars that can't race when they close up on someone. The new front chin spoiler isn't really a performance piece, but a device that forces the teams to run more ground clearance in the front and leave the front end open instead of sealed it. It's the same setup they've been running on the trucks for the last 4-5 years. Basically, the car has to rely on that front splitter for its front downforce, and running the car too low will rip that off, and destroy the handling.
The rear spoiler is more of a concession, it doesn't disturb the airflow behind the car as much, which allows a vehicle behind it to maintain more front grip, resulting in less "aero-push", or front end washout. They raised the mandated rake on the front windshield, and added about 3 inches of height to the greenhouse which basically renders the rear "airbrake" spoiler unnecessary.

Dude, they haven't been "real" cars since about 1971, in all actuality, it hasn't been a "stock" bodied vehicle since the early 60's

Wasn't they still stock bodys in the 80's but heavilly modified? Unlike today where you can only tell what the car is from the stickers. I know they was still using stock body vehicles in the early 70's, cause Petty has a 70 superbird buried under his parking lot that he got so he could use the parts off of it for his track car.

Funny how BTCC and DTM and everyone else doesn't worry "tearing" off lips but somehow Nascar is going to have a big to do with it?
Just soemthing to add drama and a reason to load speed up with garbage pre and post race bullshit all week before the week over argueing about rules. Jeff Gordan is worried at Talledega because it is not totally flat in any locations and it might tear off.
Please... they are on banked ovals. How are they going to tear it off? Not like they are hopping the gators getting into that apex.
It is LAME. It is BORING and there are stock cars... wait I bet my E36 M3, would DUST one of those shit cars around watkins glen.

36 degrees of banking that abruptly drops to about 4 degrees when you go on to pit road and the apron around it. That's a serious change, and the current spec cars have been known to bend up the valence hitting it.Funny how BTCC and DTM and everyone else doesn't worry "tearing" off lips but somehow Nascar is going to have a big to do with it?

With the current "coil-bind" setups that the teams run on the old car, they were dragging the old valence around the entire turn, they're actually grinding it down nearly two inches during a race.
Are you really trying to say that your street e36 M3 is going to "dust" an 800 hp tube framed car on slicks around the glen, with its long straightaways? It is LAME. It is BORING and there are stock cars... wait I bet my E36 M3, would DUST one of those shit cars around watkins glen.

i think they are more than 800 horse and they arent stock at all, nothing about them are except the name.Comment

not to mention that if setup to run on road courses they would eat any street car alive... dusting them in an e36 m3...Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

Chuck,
these guys are the motorsport elite, remember? They drive BMWs.
Seriously - get off your collective high horses.
Kentucky Speedway just added another driving school recently - and unlike the Petty/Jarrett/Gordon schools they also have, this bunch of RickyBobbys does not just do lead/follow sessions, but will eventually let you run a few laps with open passing with no pace car or instructor car to slow you down. (EDIT-I believe you have an instructor in the car with you in the "open session" - which is a very good thing) I am seriously thinking about giving it a whirl later this year.Last edited by Dave; 05-05-2007, 07:22 PM.Current Cars2014 M235i2009 R56 Cooper S1998 M31997 M3Comment

Most fans are unaware of the technology in any form of motor sport. You need three cars to run competitively in NASCAR: short track, super speedway, and road course. The road race innovations were done mostly by Riley & Scott and Rousch Racing. Speaking of Rousch, it took them three years to find their ass with both hands.
With the car of tomorrow and engine parity, NASCAR will be a spec car series. The only way to excel is driver, chassis tuning, and pit support.
