I can see where a 16 year old kid with his first car might ask stupid questions like that, but when I see shit like "u" and "w/" and all that other short hand crap all I think about is this kid is probably dumber than shit at everything, so I feel no pity at all.

The worst is when you get a group of people who have no idea what they are talking about and try to have a conversation about cars... I've stepped into a few of those myself and after a while I just have to ask what the holy fuck are they even talking about, it would be like me pretending I know how to fly an airplane.... I remember one kid in HS when Fast and the Furious came out just going nuts over that movie and how awesome it was. But it I actually tried to talk to him about cars he didn't know ANYTHING. Last time I talked to him he tried to explain to me how NOS worked, I think he said something like drilling a hole in the block and hooking your intake up to the hole you drilled in the block or just something really fucking stupid like that.

I really love it when honda kids try to tell you how good their car is, and how their new "performance exhaust" just added 30 more HP.

I have seen respectably fast jap cars, but the whole scene is the reason I will never tune a jap car.

      Edit:

No he said something about doing something about hooking it up to the cams in the head, I don't even remember.

Exactly, type something coherent and perhaps we can give you a straight answer.

It's mostly the lack of searching that is the issue though, I probably knew that little about cars when I first got my e30 but I GOOGLED AND SEARCHED THE FORUMS! And guess what? Now I'm a professional MECHANIC!!! It's really not hard to figure the easy shit out...

I live for those moments. I find it most effective to just put the car up on the lift and look at it critically for a few minutes while the worried owner looks on, I then look very concerned and mutter "Ooh, that's not going to be cheap..."

This is particularly fun with customers who have just bought their new toy and are worried that there might be something catastrophically wrong with it.

Ask Kate525i, I did this to her about four times on monday.... :D

-hehe I know what you mean Fidhle007. I'm a Toyoya tech, and a few days ago some chick drove in with an 07 Highlander Hybrid with like 300 miles on it, worried cuz "some clear liquid is leaking ALL OVER THE PLACE! Is it safe to DRIVE?!?" very very panicy-like. Well it was just condinsation from the AC evap core, but I had to show her that it was just water and point out the little rubber drain tube to calm her down. Poor girl.

-Anyway, back on-topic, I too can excuse ignorance but not people who don't know crap about cars and claim too. That just rubs me the wrong way. :hitler:

Absolutely, while ignorance is bliss...it's also ridiculous. I knew very little about my e30 when I first got it, but through god's grace and many e30 forums I've become fairly competent. By far the worse, is someone who really knows nothing but blows it out their ass like they know everything. Just admit that you are learning, and have many questions.

Exactly, I still consider myself in the learning stages even though my boss seems to trust me enough to point to a customers car and say "Fix it, Brendan."

                      It's all in your approach.
