Are you at all reading what I have posted my last two posts? I have never once said that the United States is completely dependant on these other countries. What I have said is that many Americans ARE dependant on the products of those countries.

I know my heritage. I'm not saying that they didn't work hard, or that the hispanic/spanish immigrants to this country deserve free hand-outs. But when you get a bunch of people sitting around talking about how annoyed they are with spanish people not speaking english... It strikes a bit of a soft spot, considering that my family LIVES in Costa Rica. I have a very large problem with the very hypocritical attitude that many Americans have towards the people of foreign countries.

Well, since we're having a discussion about immigrants learning english I feel that you should be an expert. The sad thing is that obviously you are not... Especially when you can't even manage to spell the word "families" correctly. Vacationing in a different country IS in fact different than going to live there. But many people in this thread expressed their dislike for basically anyone in the United States speaking only spanish(or another foreign language) while inside the Unites States. I simply stated that Americans do this year round while vacationing AND living in foreign countries.

As far as im concerned they have no reason once so ever to dislike us. We don't move into there country by the thousands illegally waving american flags and demanding that they all learn english. All the mexicans that come here aren't on vacation. They are moving here illegally. If they were just on vacation I doubt anyone would have a problem with the fact that they don't speak english.

Again I don't think everyone here expects VISITORS to speak english but if someone is going to LIVE in the US permanently then yes they should learn english.

If I moved to Mexico tomorrow and no one could speak english to me then then how would I have the right to get all pissed and bent out of shape because of it. Americans go on vacation and move to countries south of our border every year(more and more in the past decade), and they try very little at all to learn the language of the countries they are living in. They go to the store, and get frustrated when the workers don't speak english... You are in their country now, why don't you speak spanish?

Honestly, it pisses me off beyond belief the ignorance of some people in this country. I was born and raised mostly in the United States, and am of Irish/German descent. But my mother has lived in Costa Rica for the past 4 years, and every time I go to visit I see it more and more. This is the United States of America. English and European classical culture have never had any significant impact here. Our culture is derivative of our folk culture. It is the culture of the masses and not the artistic and aesthetic elite. Country music, blues, jazz and their contemporary manifestations are the dominant influences. It's the culture of radio and TV. English culture is the culture of England and even that's dead. So, should the Hispanics cop to Nashville or the ghetto? Look at your CD collection. I don't know, I get the feeling that half the illegals come here just to work and don't even care to learn english anyway so it's a mute point since govt. even allows it and as previous posts stated who else is going to do some of those jobs... pretty sad.

P.S. I totally agree with what Arnold said.

I agree with much of what you've said in this post, but those jobs you're talking about have traditionally been worked by the descendants of Africans brought over to work as slaves, who are still the poorest people in this country. They are really the ones who have been displaced by this activity. It's true that not many people want these jobs, but as bad as it is, it's still better than not having any job and being poor and broke.

You bring up a pretty good point, but the problem is, the Africans are not here demanding that we speak one of their languages or waving African flags around. I guess what I am trying to say, is they are better than that, and are working their asses off also, and not getting the credit they deserve as you pointed out.
