Dad just got a Olympic Arms Ar-15. He didnt tell me much, but it looks nice. Believe it is used, but I do know it is a 7.62mm

WTF thats not an "assault weapon" its a sporting rifle

apparently because the flash hider was not permanently mounted (tac welded or with a rod) and the threads could be exposed, it is considered an assault weapon. I say bullshit too, but oh well, they'll be back soon and I'll be ready :)

Does anyone have a good reference for a place to ID guns and basic maintenance/cleaning/things to know?

My grandpa handed me down a few guns and there appears to be a pretty nice shotgun in the bunch a long with his original rabbit hunting gun from when he was a kid. I shot the little .22 rifle but then realized I really need to clean/oil/learn what the fuck I'm doing with it.

You could probably take it to a gunsmith or a good gun shop and they'll be able to ID the gun for you. For learning basic maintenance/cleaning/stuff like that, you may want to ask a friend who knows that stuff already. I think NRA has a few basic courses that covers maintenance, but it's a pretty pricey way just to learn that on a couple different types of guns.

too bad the real definition of an assault weapons means it has a selector switch and not how scary or militaryish it looks

Not quite done, but it's close enough to post a picture. Just have to get a bolt carrier group, rear sight, and some ammo. (The charging handle came in the mail after that pic was taken.) I officially have the black rifle disease and I'm already planning my next ar build.

let me know how you like it. i am thinking of picking one up. i read that the have some feed problems, but that s&w fixed that, and that a lot of the time it is because of pore quality rim fire amo incorrect loading of amo.
15-22 seams like a good first rifle for me, and i like the ar platform. for $400 i dont think i can go wrong.
a while ago i said my brother and i were going to pick up an ak, but that never happened do to the fact my dad had to barrow a large amount of money from us (economy/expensive living in sf). i think i have gotten back to the point where i can start thinking about getting a rifle again, and after doing some thinking and more reading i think i should start with a ar stile rifle in a small caliber just to do some learning, and then move up. dont run before you can walk sort of thing i guess.

I can not understand the fetish with people and wanting to own an AR-15.

After I EAS I will never touch an M16/AR-15 ever again. 7 months too many carrying one around 24/7 whether its during sleep, chow or shower time.

Thats not to say that I cant hit black at 600 yards with nothing but iron sights. I just dont enjoy carrying the damn thing around.
