Went to go pick up some parts for that AR-15 build I mentioned earlier and impulse bought one of these: Daniel Defense DDMV3

I jumped in head first. Time to learn how to use this thing.

Nice! Best way to learn how to safely and effectively operate that beast is to take a basic rifle course and then a tactical carbine course after that. Good fun.

Like sleeve, I dislike Glocks. But try one out at a range and a S&W and whatever else they have. I shot my buddy's new Springfield XDM 9mm against both those alternatives and XDM won both us over. Trigger and grip safety, lots of stuff included in the case, and great capacity. But at the same time, I'm a Beretta fan. Everyone is different so try before you buy. If no rental, find a friend with a possible option and see if they will let you try it out with them. Maybe offer to cover the ammo and range time, but then again they might just get a kick out of showing it off.

Indeed like parsedout said; start out with 22lr's and take a course to not only learn good safety practices but also avoid bad habits. You should be able to get a 22 handgun and rifle for 600, stock up on ammo if you can find good quality for a dime a round, then figure out what centerfire guns would fit you best.

I too, don't care for Glocks (but will still probably buy one for giggles) S&W M&P is pure sex.

I owned an XDM and loved the shit out of it. That said I am 99% sure my next purchase will be a Glock. The XDM aftermarket is shit, as are the magazine options (1).

That said, the XDM is not approved for sale in California so that's out of the question anyway.

Where are you guys buying your 45ACP at??

I just hit up bass pro and Wally World with no luck :/. Bass pro had some but at .70/rd I feel I could do better. Looks like some new dies and supplies are in the near future. Wally World had lots of 223/556 at 10.50/box.. Meh

I have been getting my 45acp from Wal-Mart, they have had it at ~$.45/rd. They have been stocking 5.56 as well for $0.50/rd.

Accident, well too bad for them, lol.

Yeah - Glock is one of the most successful brands so there's plenty of fans and a lot of money in aftermarket, like BMW. XDM is good for someone who is just looking for a great off the shelf package, like people who don't mod their cars. There are different strokes for different folks.

Henryki - in addition to the other mentions, some people like CZs. There's not enough slide to grip for my tastes on a 75 and slide release placement not my favorite. But there are some that are CA legal.

On the pistol thing as well. You can get your self a nice 22LR pistol for about 400 bucks, and a 22LR barrel main spring and slide conversion for many of the big name pistol makers to train with. My FIL just picked up a SIG 1911-22 last night and its bad ass, we have not shot it yet, but its got the same heft and balance as loaded 1911 with the way they have weighted the pistol. Its a very good training platform from what I can tell of it so far. Might be a good option to consider as well.

Phased out has hit most of the points I didnt have time to get too before. A good 22lR is a great place to learn the fundamentals (thats where most of us get our start) hell even a good air gun (BB/pellet rifle) would be a good place to start off as well, though you will have to latter learn to cope with recoil. You will get solid advice here but if you go back and read though it you will get information overload. I know its LONG and there is some bickering and bantering here and there, along with some time period specific semi political side bars, but over all there are reams of great information and some really good discussions in it. Over all it leans heavy on the Sporting AR pattern rifle and semi auto pistols, but I think it one of the better all encompassing threads around on the topic, and I am member of several firearms forms as well.....

Have you tried Cabelas? During the Great Ammo Scare of 2013 they were always fair priced and usually had stock.

Fair is generally not the first word that comes to mind when thinking about cabelas ammo prices.

Going to make a phone call to the PA game commission for a copy of my Hunters safety course certificate on Monday. I also have taken the MD handgun safety course, which I believe applies.... But I gotta track down that paper work too. I seriously wish I had kept better records when I was younger.

Then it's off to apply for my CCW permit in VA.

Stoked. It feels good to live in a state that respects the 2nd.

kinda what I was thinking, we have a "out post" one now, it just opened up this fall, and I was wandering around in it looking to spend my 50 dollar gift card form a year or 2 ago. Was thinking ammo, well I could not even get 2 boxes of standard federal in .308 or 45acp
