    Road Maps

Has reading road maps become a lost art? Or is it that most people I meet are just geographically deficient?

Whenever I am invited somewhere or I have to meet someone to do business I always ask for the address.. I tell them, "Just give me the address and I can find it. And their response is usually, "What? You have a GPS?" and I tell them that I have a map. "A map?! I don't think you will be able to find out where we are with a MAP!" Maybe its just me, but I find it to be disturbing that so many people think that it's impossible to find a street address without a GPS or Mapquest. Granted these things are nice and they make navigation easier, however, it irritates me when people assume that these are the only methods of finding an address. I mean, before GPS was invented, how did the police, ambulance, and fire department find people's houses? I don't think that anyone has ever had to give a policeman or fire fighter directions to their house.

I have my personnal satelite beam me a big red light that points to where i need to go. then an arrow on top of my windsheild gives me the general direction of travel.

the arrow is usually pointing to your moms house.

I still use maps. But I use a combination of MapQuest and maps usually. MapQuest for directions, a regular map for more info (like millage, rest stops, exits, etc.).

F' mapquest, use the google maps. I haven't used a map in 5 years, and even they I only used it for out of my city travel.

Ken, what is a Thomas Guide??

Rand McNally has a series of map books that they publish under different names according to whatever region you are in. For the mid-atlantic area, we have the ADC map book. The thomas guide is what they use out in the PNW.

Its a relatively easy guide to use because all of the street names are indexed with the page number and grid coordinates plus there is an overlay chart showing a complete overview of the area. So if you want to compare where you are to where you are going, you can look at the entire area and then quickly turn to the page that you need to see. I find it to be very useful and effective while I am out driving.

It's easy to find a shortcut on a map too.
