True Father of Flight: Alberto Santos-Dumont (20 July 1873 – 23 July 1932)
Wrights=1903. They used a track to solve the landing gear problem.
1903<1906
Landing gear was not a problem. The problem was taking off. They used a track/catapult to send their plane into the air. Not to mention this was done in areas meant to purposely afford them high winds, while sometimes only witnessed by a neighboring farmer.
"Santos Dumont, who had thus, solved the problem of making a heavier-than-air machine take off by its own means."
Just FYI wikkipedia is not a peer reviewed source. Meaning it would not be an acceptable source if you were writing a report for any respectable university.

I understand, I only intended on introducing some of who he was and what he did with that first post. I decided to see what the Smithsonian site had to say about him and posted it here. I'm sure there are those that would also argue against that source. I'm not trying to take away anything from the Wrights. Originally, the post was only to remember him on his birthday, however I admit, I left room/words for discussion.
This was such a long time ago, it's really hard for anyone to take up the discussion without being ignorant. Regardless, the hardcore facts are easily obtained. Santos Dumont was the first to be recognized worldwide for the first heavier-than-air flight, without any assitance from slides, tracks, catapults or considerably favorable winds. His flight was observed by aviation officials as well as other aviation pioneers. The Wrights claimed their first flight only after Santos' first flight took place. Santos never took out a patent on anything. His studies, findings and plans were wide open to the world as well.
The Wright brothers where first in powered flight, not first in "taking off under their own power."
Meaning first to sustain flight by means of some form of propulsion, which they did, before Santos.
So blow it out your pie-hole.
Or don't put rediculously loaded titles on threads such as: "True" father of flight.
Sorry, Santos is by your own definition no more the true father of flight than the Wright Brothers, its great you have pride in a national figure, but don't try to make a loaded statement and expect people to not flat out disagree with you. its not like he was the first to dream up the idea, he was just the first to be succesfull at it. Same went for the Wright Brothers.

The "rediculously" loaded title was meant to draw your exact type of response..
Thanks for flying with us....
Note: he is also the father of the wristwatch just in case you wanted to know what time it was....

Oh really?
The wristwatch was invented by Patek Philippe at the end of the 19th century. At the time, it was considered a woman's accessory. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that the Brazilian inventor Alberto Santos-Dumont, who had difficulty checking the time while in his first aircraft (Dumont was working on the invention of the aeroplane), asked his friend Louis Cartier for a watch he could use more easily. Cartier gave him a leather-band wristwatch from which Dumont never separated. Being a popular figure in Paris, Cartier was soon able to sell these watches to other men.
I bet that fucker never invented anything...

lol, the source you yourself quote refers to him as an inventor. Are you doubting or disagreeing with the same source you quote to try and make a point?

Besides, I never even once brought up any of his inventions. I simply said he fathered in the wristwatch as the world now knows it. If you still feel like betting though, Cartier makes the Santos watch till this day. I'll pay shipping...
Who fucking cares, they all helped us to where we are today.
