Cool Job versus well paying job.

Long story short, Im going back to school mid-september and I have 2 summer jobs. One of the jobs has to go.

Job 1: Bike shop, where I work on bikes, sell bikes and get a mad discount. I like the job in general Pay: $7.50/hr.

Job 2: Work for a large bank in Central Ohio, the job is monotanous, and ive found that dealing with peoples money is very fickle, and tedious. Pay:$10.00/hr.

Which job needs to go? Im a junior year Economics major. Ive been w. the bank for about 2 months, the Bike shop about a yr, and could probably leverage a pay raise out of them. I know i should do what I like, which is the bike shop, but being an econ major and quitting the bank is really shooting myself in the foot career wise. Advice from elders is much appreciated.

Bank... not for the money.... By the way, if you don't like it there now..... just wait... it gets worse

My brother in-law works for US bank, he's got an economics degree also.... he's not too fond of it....

I worked at a bike shop in high school.. it was the shit.... but it's no career..... having said that, it was probably the best job I ever had... nothing but good times.... Factory discounts, great looking chicks, riding everyday, slack work.....

nothing like getting things for cost minus 20 percent. but cheap bikes/parts will really only get you so far in this world.

Im pretty dead set on not staying in retail banking, i would rather end up on the investment side of things.

sounds like you already made up your mind... stay in the area you want to go, employers look for experience when it comes down to it.

if i can get the raise at the shop, yeah, but if not, im not sure where I will end up.

my manager @ the bank spoke to me pretty candidly today about his dislike for the company/policies they employ. he being a 6 yr employee, i take that seriously. im just having a hard time thinking of where my next "in" will be after college.

There is alot to be said about really enjoying what you do for a living. Money is not everything when it comes to a job. I know a husband and wife who were both well accomplished lawyers who gave up their successfull practice and moved to Colorado and opened a small pet store in one of the popular towns in the mtns. They are way more happy with how they are living in their life than when their practice ran their life. At least for now I would stay with what you really like and worry about something in the field you are studying once you get your degree.

My bro-in-law, does investments (I think) it's all very boring when he talks about it... (I try not to pass out) all I know is, he's reasonably high up the food chain, makes about 200K a year, has a 1.2M condo in San Diego, blah, blah, blah.....

And he's really not happy doing what he's doing..... his only defense? The money is great....

I need something fast paced, Id like to work on the floor of the NYSE, work in arbitrage, or as a day trader. Dealing directly with customers who complain about fees, try to barter, negotiate, kick, scream, isnt my bag. I dont know what their problem is, but ive never once walked into a bank and thought I could barter or whine my way out of shit like these assholes do.

you are young. there is a lot of time in your life to do what you hate and despise for the money.

This will sound cliche', but life is too short to put up with a shitty job for too long. Honestly, I don't think it will matter much to any potential employers after you graduate if you worked at a bank in a low-level job, or at a bike shop.

Before you know it, you'll be an old fucker like me- and you'll wonder where the time went. I just recently went to my 25th HS reunion!! I still can't believe that shit.

Call me a slacker or unmotivated or whatever, but as long as I make enough $$ to pay the bills with a little left over- and I can do this in as few hours per week as possible, I'm happy. We are in the planning stages of building a new house, and plan to pay for it in full with the $$$ we got from selling our other house that I bought 6 months out of college, and paid off before we sold it. Probably not too many 40-something people can say they've paid off their house in full.

No car payment + no house payment mean less BS work for me.

                        Bret.

There is a time in your life to choose between happiness and money, and this is not that time. However there are other factors to consider here.

The most important thing is focusing on school, the extra money from the bank job might help you feel more financially stable. Also consider looking into tuition reimbursement if you work for a significantly large institution. I worked for a very large bank in college, and they paid for 1/2 of my tuition.

On the other hand, my job at the bank required my full attention, the entire time, and the last thing I felt like doing at the end of the day was homework. Is your boss at the bike shop flexible? Cool with you doing homework while sitting at the register sometimes? Is the job fun enough that it doesn't feel like a job? You might be able to focus on school better if you're not constantly stressed out about work. There will be other opportunities for summer internships here and there. I wouldn't stress too much about your next "in"

What would I do? If I thought I could survive on $7.50 an hour, or I though I could weasel a raise out at the bike store, I'd stay there. At the end of the day, school is the most important thing. Leave your worries about what to do after school for when that time comes. Remember, you'll have a degree and you will have real world experience already, there will be opportunities for you, and you won't have to work your way from the very bottom like you'd be doing if you stayed at your current company.

What exactly are you doing at the bank? If you're a teller or something similar, that's not going to wow a future employer.

Stay at the bike shop and hook me up with a fox fork.
