    Help with simple home wiring

I am trying to wire up a momentary switch and a small light using 120v hose current. I have a plug, and when I connect the two wires off the plug to the switch, it sparts and the fues in the house wants to trip (I stop it before it does). This is what I have.

Welcome to RadioShack's official website. Search and shop for electronics, gaming devices, powerbanks, audio products and business traveling gear.

The rest is just a plug and the light. Why is this sparking when connected and shit?

    Thanks.

What kind of lamp? And how did you wire it?

Should look like this (I in no way take responsibility for this information, please consult with your local electrician, as they are qualified to perform this type of work - ***standard disclaimers apply***)

The datasheet on that switch, said it's only good for 0.5Amps, that's not exactly a lot of current.

That switch is normally closed. I.E. - It is in the "On" position without pressing the button. Are you hooking just the switch to the outlet?

Ya, pretty much. I know, I suck at the wiring.

Ok, just like the diagram posted by thectrlguy says.

The switch goes in one of the wires, not on both, the point is that you cut and splice one of the two wires (preferably the negative), then place the switch there, when you open the switch you break the circuit and the electricity (which flows from one hole of the outlet to the other, powering anything in the way) will stop flowing.

              Good luck. ;)

If your first post is correct, you are making a dead short!

Pay close attention to the diagram posted, see how one wire connects to the bulb directly, then only ONE wire goes to the switch, the other side of the switch then goes to the bulb?

                  You will get it....
