A couple of my 23-year-oldish friends got carded also... I wonder if because this movie was so crude and nasty they were on mega rated-R alert or some BS.

Actually there is no "law" against being underaged in R rated movies. Its just that the MPAA makes guidelines regarding what is appropriate for certain age groups. That way if you are under 17 and you go see a horror movie that gives you nightmares, your parents can't sue the producer of the movie or the theater because you knew ahead of time that you had no business being in there.
When I was a teenager, the local multiplex used to let underaged kids into the R rated movies all of the time. But then again, they almost HAD to in lieu of letting 3000 teenagers loiter in front of the theater. The cops probably persuaded the theater to look the other way.
