So, I saw a 91 318is for sale last night on craigslist for $800.

"White 1991 BMW 318is............17 in wheels....with 50 series tires
body in good shape ...inside small tear in back seat...no glove compartment
engine in good shape ....5 speed good clutch driven by a grandpa for 10 years......minor tweaks needed......only major thing is it will need a new cat-converter...as it runs very loud.....fees are paid ....but it will cost a couple hundred to pass smog....so 800 takes it ....... "

I get there with cash and it's got a dented to hell front valance, broken front bumper, damaged rear valance (pulled) like the car ran over something and it dragged the rear valance a little. Rear subframe is coated in black oil.

Open the hood and what do you see , a puddle of oil on the valve cover... hmm wTf

I removed the plastic spark plug wire cable and what do we have here ?
Anybody want to guess ? This guy said he was driving it for about 6 months, and it's "a little sluggish due to the hole in the cat, but runs fine".. a spark plug just laying there on top of the valve cover...one spark plug wire almost cut in a half, and a puddle of oil in the other spark plug hole.... holly shit....

How do you drive a car for 6 months and let the entire engine bay coat itself in oil and have a spark plug just sit there on top of the engine... wtf yo.


I didn't buy it because I didn't want to risk it with a full engine overhaul, I just looked at it as a possible cheap daily...

He wasn't dropping the price, just kept saying how for about 300 you can have yourself a nice "whip"....ugh...I was just amazed that someone can drive a car for who knows how long with a spark plug just resting on the engine , not just a spark plug wire... so not only was 1 of the 4 cyl's not getting a spark but also no compression, and spark plug whole on the cyl next to it was half full with oil and the spark plug wire was cut in a half down to the center conductor. Probably explains why hes got a hole in cat, car probably ran super rich for a couple of months.... We couldn't even get a good reading on the oil in the car, it was park on a huge hill.... who knows what damage it's done to the internals already :(

I didn't have a spark plug socket with me, we looked for a nearby kragen and it was already closed (this was in the pm). I was going to have the car towed and deal with the valance, bumper, no glove box, no speakers or stereo, cat. It was when I found oil everywhere, driver side near oil filter housing was another puddle and infront of the oil pan... that's when I decided not to. Even for 500 i would probably not do it and spend more on something else instead. Good luck to the future owner though ;)

I found mine on craigslist, but I only searched in nice areas (Livermore for example). Thats sounds like a Sac/Stockton/Modesto type of deal no offense. I also paid $3200

It took me 9 months to find a good 318iS. I almost bought a 325e in burgundy and tan. That would have been ALOT better...
