I've hand build high end video editing rigs for myself and a few friends for the last 10 years now.

Best way for someone that doesn't know exactly what they need to get, is to find a benchmarked system out the (toms hardware, and other places like that is your best bet) - find a system in your budget and them COPY the parts list.

Do yourself a favor and go to pricewatch.com, it will give you the lowest price around - offten saving you $100's of bucks.

Ebay is not bad too - I got a Nvidia quatro card - the highest end card made at the time for about 25% retail.

NEWEGG is the ultimate, i buy ALL my hardware from their, i think under my account name i have something like 6grand worth of purchases just from there...

Alot of it was for builds for friends, but still, i love newegg.
Even tho they shipped my Opteron 148 in a ram case holder... -bent pins, i fixed them :)
But yeah, NEWEGG is TEH BEST!

sort it out, cause really you cant beat anything newegg has to offer, CANT!

Oh and if anything, join some hardware forums, you can buy stuff thats in perfect condition from people there, and itll prolly be freakin crazy cheap.
like anandtech, hard forum, and ars technica... tomshardware is okay too....

dang i dont really wanna sound like a nerd...
Still need $$$ for an e30...

Just kidding about CompUSA. I only go there if I need something NOW and I am out of options! I like tiger direct and I can find some pretty good deals at PCRETRO.com. They are good if you don't have to have the latest and greatest machine. Not the best place if you want to build your system from scratch but they are excellent in pricing on used "store bought" computer hardware.
