    If the management treats the laborers like cattle or robots and the workers don't know any better, then a union is necessary. When I worked in telemarketing there was an incident where the system went down and they sent us home for 3 hours and then required us to come back and work for 1 more. They thretened to fire anyone who didn't return to work. 99% of us went for it and then I felt stupid afterwards when they announced that there would be no penalties for whoever didn't return. Also when we got 18 inches of snow, the management required everyone to report to work on time even though none of them showed up at all. The hotline warned us that all absences would be regarded as unexcused and you were likely to get fired. The next day we found out that it was all a lie just to get us to come to work.

    Had we had a union in this circumstance we would not have been jerked around.
