Question for those journalism/ PR majors & minors.

    Sup?

For a school project I need to get some resources on how to get CNN to feature an international cultural event.

So tips or brandground info on:

    - What makes for a good story for CNN to actually have a cameraman do some recordings?

-How can a video entry made by a local television station be appealing enough?

    - What ensures that an I-Report be aired?

Someone one here prolly has some good ideas or criteria facts ! I need your help ;):D.

    knthx

As a PR major, I can tell you that the magnitude of a story to be aired on CNN has to have some sort of national effect to it.

Are there any more of these events going on across the nation? Basically, if you have to pitch the story to an editor in an appealing manner and pray that you get a response.

Its not easy getting a story to CNN...let alone a local station.

I have a strange feeling that CNN will never do a cultural based story. They deal in scaring old white people, and that's it.

So if an event is taking place in Europe, it'd have to have some bearing on the U.S itself?...

Take say that photographer guy who photographs groups of people nude all over the world in public. What would make CNN do a short story on that. Would it just be the controversial element?

Thanks for the ideas. Dont hesitate to throw some more.

Well....consider this, how often do you see cultural event coverage on CNN?

I'm not talking about news that occurs overseas, I'm talking about events, such as 'Bastille Day' in France or the practice of Ramadan for Muslims.

What are you hoping to pitch to CNN?

It's a live statue event . There are some small in scale in Miami , Barcelona and a few other cities.

What, scaring old white people? If you turn on CNN right now, what will you see? A bar of scrolling news across the bottom about "terror alerts" and bombings and military action. I'm pretty sure they still even use the Terror Alert Status color rating. Even look at their website. There's a screenshot below. See any positive news on there? I don't. I'm not trying to get all Michael Moore on you, but it's been my observation that the masses can be controlled by fear if they're constantly told by a "reputable" source that their lives are in danger.

Define international cultural event, events such as the lighting of luminaries in Hiroshima is an international cultural event. Because it is part of Japanese history. Or do you mean something along the lines of a gathering of international cultures... Perhaps even as miniscule as a Bite Of The (insert city name) in which vendors of all nationalities show off their culinary skills.

So tips or brandground info on:

                    - What makes for a good story for CNN to actually have a cameraman do some recordings?

Sort of hard to answer. It is kind of a two fold question. What type of event would CNN pay a freelance cameraman for his footage? What type of event would CNN send a reporter and cameraman to? Think politics or disasters. Anything political that is even remotely scandelous and/or attention grabbing will for sure be worth CNN's time. And then anywhere blood is spilled. School shootings, hurricane hitting orphanage, celebrity choking on vomit.

-How can a video entry made by a local television station be appealing enough?
Rarity. If you are the only one to have it, then it is appealing. Ever notice how when something incredible happens (meteorite falling, car crash, unexpected attack) that the first few pieces of footage are always shitty? It is usually because news sources will take anything they can get from a high 8 handycam footage to cellphone pictures, pretty much anything untill they can get their own crew on scene

                    - What ensures that an I-Report be aired?

                      Ahh thnx Midnight Sun.

The event is: An Annual Live Statue festival held in The Netherlands. Participants come from all over the world and the event is growing slowly year by year. Each particiapant showcases his/her culture. The organization hopes to get on CNN, with hope of a broader reach (in terms of attracting more spectators & of course visitors to the event from as many countries possibe.

The event is also a competition. It has recieved some international attention; just not CNN yet.

Naked chicks or a terrorist attack.

The problem with CNN is it is a US news outlet. And as Americans all we are generally interested in is tits or explosions. :D

To be honest, I havent watched CNN in awhile, but I can only guess they are running an assload of coverage on the 2008 election with random stuff about Iraq and then talking about gas prices.

The local news I watch (NWCN) only covers about one soft store for every 25 minutes of news. Most of these soft stories are relevant as being newsworthy for a few reasons. They are raising money for some important charity, it is a major community event, a celebrity is there, an celebrity is one of the artists, a politician will be there, or tits.

I'd say your best bet to get CNN coverage would be an international/famous figure stopping by. A statute festival in Europe isn't going to be relevant to CNN watchers unless Keanu Reeves is there to sign a statue of Neo, or Nelson Mandela will be there to present an artist who depicted the ending of apartheid in a statue some kind of award.

Sort of a ramble, but are you catching what I am flinging?
