You'll get more comfortable with more saddle time, but yes, fixies are kinda scary sometimes. Get some cages on those pedals!

I have another set of pedals with cages. I take it those are more preferred for fixie riding?

The cages will help you control the cranks better.. like in an emergency stop.
Honestly, I'm not really sure why the track bikes (fixed/no brakes) are so popular for the street. I'd be scared too. :p

Makes sense haha. I'll have to try it next time I practice on the fixed gear. Honestly, I don't see myself going strictly fixed gear. Especially riding around people with headphones and stuff.

So I just picked up a bike for college and was wondering what type of tires/inner tubes people recommend for street/light terrain duty. tires on there are 24 by 1.95 right now. thoughts? thanks guys.

You're probably not gonna take that thing off road. so I'd recommend some slick tires that roll smoother and hold higher air pressure. Then for puncture resistant I'd sneek some "Tuffys" in there.

Im just joking C record is killer, i had delta brakes on my Pinarello.
I just prefer the shifting precision of the Superb stuff vs then the nuovo or super or the c-record. The brakes offered better grip too. I really hated the old Mondolo stintered pads

I'm so used to riding fixed now that there are times on my other bikes that I'll go to slow down with just the crank and it's like oops, nothing there! Once you get used to it, I think you'll appreciate the additional control that goes along with a fixed gear. I found that gearing mine down helped with the learning curve.

One side benefit I've found is that my technique on the road bike has improved with experience on the fixie. I rarely coast now, it just feels odd. I drop fewer gears climbing hills than I used to, and some that I used to have to stand up for I can now take without leaving the saddle.

The headphones would make me nervous on any bike, fixed or not. No thanks.

I have ridden fixed and currently ride a full carbon road bike. To be honest I like the fixed riding but I recommend a front brake for road use. There are so many unexpected obstacles that having a little extra security helps.

I've got a front brake, but I like not having to rely solely on it to regulate my speed.

Riding brakeless never seemed like a good idea to me.

I was talking about other people (college students) with headphones on, not me...

Ah good on ya, mate. I see people riding around Boston with headphones on and I have to wonder if they also have suicide notes in their pockets.

                                Blows my mind.
