    Anyone heard of Korman Autoworks

They claim to be Americas leading bmw tuners.
Or Ray Korman. Or any contributions to racing by Korman autoworks. Or have had anything done with 'em? Just wondering.

They're in my neck of the woods. I know someone who works there well, and they're spoken of highly, but I've never seen their name dropped anywhere else. Don't even go to their website, it hasn't been updated in years cus theyre lazy and their webmaster got shot. (Lie.)

or if you want to, www.kormanfastbmw.com and note the "America's Leading BMW Tuner" sign.

Do you also agree with the whole leading tuner thing?

EDIT: I should also add that I do know them well, I buy stuff from them, and got my I through their connections (simply put.) So I gues swhat I really wanna know is if they are as big as they claim.

They've been around since the 70's. In all honesty, I think that's the last time their website was updated as well. In all seriousness, that site hasn't changed since 1997.

Overpriced, kinda weird to deal with, and from what I've gathered, not too concerned with "new" customers. They've got a good base to go from, and are definetly knowledgable on the older cars. My dad got parts & advice from Ray when he built up his 2002 - in 1976.

The last serious club racing car's I've seen them touch were e36s. Back in the mid 90's, when that site was built, you didn't have places like Turner, Bimmerworld, and others in full force - so it might have meant more. Now, it looks like all the site is is a frontend for third party stuff.

Not sure what you're trying to get at.

You say you know about them, and got your car thru them- why all the nebulous questions??

It's well established that they've been working on and tuning BMW's for many, many years. Ray Korman has been racing BMW's since the 60's when he was in the military- he's a VERY knowledgeable guy, and a really nice guy, but he (and his shop) are not necessarily on the 'cutting edge' of BMW performance (this is not a slam, I think he'd probably agree with that statement). The stuff they do is solid work, and it's backed by years and years of REAL racing experience, NOT some BS street racing or just adding dyno numbers together.

The "America's Leading BMW Tuner" thing is as much an advertising slogan as anything- if you believe ALL of the advertising slogans and claims, you'd think Taco Bell was gourmet food, and that the Chrysler Sebring was the best performing car ever made........

BTW- Ray Korman's grandson is a member of this board- not sure if he will post up in this thread though....

EDIT: you left out another option for your poll-

            "apexede30 is a troll" ;)

They are definitely still doing their own stuff- their site is kind of weak compared to many others, and their catalog (which is the basis of most of their website) has always been kind of non-user friendly.

They stock most of the items on their site, and ship directly from their Greensboro NC location. I'm sure some stuff is drop-shipped if they don't have it in stock, and I'm sure you can shop around and find the same parts cheaper- but they still do lots of work on a daily basis in their real live shop- from Classic 2002 restorations to full race car prep to everything in between.

They were one of the first to race E30's back in ~85-86 when they campaigned some 325es' in the Firestone Firehawk series, they did pretty well too.

I've got a big old Korman catalogue chock full of e30 content and information.

                >> 1988 3.1 ITB E30 /// 2002 E46 M3 6MT / 2008 335xi 6MT / 1991 S38B36 E30 (sold)

Just wonderin what people here think of em. Yeah, I know em, I'm just askin around. Had to look up nebulous too. :(.

Well, leading does imply that they're definately cutting edge to me. The place is tiny, and I haven't been to any other shop that races at all, xept carr industries. Wanted to know if people heard of it, and if they are big deals in the US. Not many other ways to reach out and see what comes up.

PS. rigmaster. out of curiosity, where is Elk Grove Farm? I'm in greensboro, never heard of it. Been living here for a while too.

I kind of figured you'd need a dictionary.

Still not sure what you're getting at here- "leading" to me means many things, I think you're making a big deal out of nothing. Take a year off from your job, or the 8th grade or prison, or whatever you do to pass time and travel around the country using any of the big car mags' ad section as your travel guide. You would be amazed at the shitholes that many of those guys work out of- the size/flashiness of their magazine ads seem to be inversely proportional to the size/quality of their real life facilities- in most cases. The true racers spend most of their $$$ racing, the poseurs spend more $$ on blingifying their surroundings and making fancy customer waiting rooms with cappucino machines and scantily-clad "comfort girls" to wait on them.

Never heard of Elk Grove Farm...........................ELM Grove Farm is the name of the farm we live on, about 30 minutes SE of Raleigh.. ;)

I've given you my thoughts about Korman- carry on..........

Yeah I must say their site is sad. But they are a great company but I'm slightly bias ;)

And yes the current #28 Club race car is an e36. I am leaving tomorrow to go to Mid Ohio to crew. The car is a D mod and Ray does an excellent job with the car. He is faster than most of the C mods and VERY close to some B mods in the rain. But he has PLENTY of years experience at the tracks around here.

They are a stand up shop that does everything to the fullest . When they build something they do it right.

They are more of a performance shop than just an oil change place. They do some maintenance but a majority of their work is either building race cars or restoring classics.

All that being said its kinda hard to say who is the “very best” but I don’t think anyone would argue that they aren’t one of the best, if not the best in the business.

                      Anyway thats just my opinon...

Bret do you ever hunt the elk on your farm??

BTW I had a guy follow my car the other day up here. When I pulled into work he was like hey nice 318 man! I laughed a little under my breath and said thanks. He said he saw the stickers on my fenders and was wondering if Korman had built my car. He said he was about to buy a car that Korman built a few years ago. I saw that build all through the process and its deff an incredible 2002. But yeah somehow I doubt he would have followed me if I had a sparco sticker or even a Turner sticker on the car.

Ouch. Never heard of elm grove farm, thanks, and genuine thanks for the input.

And I honestly can't tell if you're being a dick or just making some harmless jokes, buut I do know shitholes. And I do understand that racing kills money, that it's done for the love of it, not the "bling" or for the "comfort girls". Nor do I claim to race. Never been on the track, actually.
