    Mystery video codec?

I downloaded the latest Clarkson special, "Heaven and Hell" in a .avi format, but it won't play with either DivX or Media Player 11, it just says that it can't play the file. The file (as far as I can tell) is just a regular .avi file, but it won't play like the rest of the .avi's that I have. I don't want to have to download yet another media player just to watch this, so is there any way to find out what codec it needs to play it?

You don't have VLC Media Player? It'll play anything you throw at it.

I guess I could get that and ditch the DivX player. Does the VLC player have the ability to change the aspect ratio to 16:9?

          Yeah, some automotive porn.

Just installed VLC, wow. This thing kicks ass. I uninstalled DivX and made VLC my default player, this is great.

BTW, "Heaven And Hell" isn't Clarkson's newest bit of video.

dowlnoad g-spot if there's anything elsey ou can't play, it will tell you what it is and where to download it.

Also, VLC is alright but its kind of clunky for dialy usage except for those rare things that absolutely won't play. But if you download media player classic and ffdshow, along with the ac3filter there is almost nothing on the internet you won't be able to play

I downloaded the Kazaa Codec Pack with media player classic and have yet to find something I can't play.

I have that too, except for media player classic, don't really like it. VLC is awesome, though.

But when I tried to open the Clarkson video in VLC, it just played like it was an audio track, but with no sound for about 30 seconds, with no video screen. Must have been a bad file.

VLC is the shiznit for watching videos on a computer, been using it for a couple years without any need to change. Much lighter on resources than many other players.

I use vlc but if you want to use win media player go to

doom9.org and download the gordian knot codec pack. Its essentially an install containing every codec known to man.

VLC does just about everything. I also suggest everyone gets a recent build of FFDshow. :)

zoom player or bust. Further it will link you to the latest stable codec's instead of bundled packs like kazaa pack. But like mentioned above, it is far from perfect but ffdshow will handle xvid, ogg, ac3, most subtitles, etc.
