Sweet! How much did those springs run you?? I Just got a Mk2 Golf 8v i wanted to slam it down. Its a beater but some things like rear discs, and little upgrades like that would make it a little cooler.
What gen Jetta is it? Motor? I had a 16v Jetta - It was alright, I just thought it was too little motor for swinging a trunk around.
Only 16v Jetta I'd bother with now would be a non-ABS Helios, but there are so few nice ones left, and that kind of money will buy a nice m-tech ragtop.
I guess I'm just more of a hatchback VW guy if I had to have one.
It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.
I have a mk3 2.slow. I really wanted to get a mk2 for a daily, but I needed something that wasn't beat to shit and won't break down every 10 miles. Thats all I could find at the time in MN. I ended up finding a kick ass deal on my mk3, 116k for $2700 with no rust, just a few blemishes here and there.
The only things that have gone wrong were going to happen on any car. Had to replace the front pads and rotors, and the brake MC went out. Until now I have only spent like $250 on this car. Pretty good for the 50k I have put on it.
Unfortunately someone did a shit ass respray on my car, I guess it had been in an accident, I never did a carfax on it when I bought it. I got some surface rust on the front 2 fenders now.
The suspension is gone now, I blew out all the struts and shit, and the mk3 springs are crap. I had to replace all of my sisters, and now mine busted. So I said fuck it and got a cup kit.
The car has been a handful the past month though. Blew my oil cooler seal and oil went down the tranny inspection plug and soaked my clutch, so its slippin now. So within the last month I will have done a timing belt and water pump, themostat, new suspension, and a new clutch soon.
As far as the cup kit goes, its not the best, but a good bang for the buck. I spent a while on vortex looking up reviews on it and I haven't heard anything really negative about it. I got it for $350 shipped with all new mounts so that was a pretty kick ass deal. I was originally gonna get vogtland springs with blue monroes and new mounts and the total on that was $375.
Edit:
I got the car purely for DDing. Its not fast, it doesn't take corners well, but it gets 32mpg (another reason why I wanted a 2.slow) and its a nice car to beat around in. Thats all I wanted so it works perfect for me. Everyone knocks mk3s as chick cars, but I like it, its a great DD IMO.
An ex-GF of mine has wadded up not 1, but 2, MK3 Jettas. Goofy broad was texting (on a snowy road?!?) & lost one in a deep ditch that flipped it, and the other time she was pulled out on, so not really her fault. So she's on her third Jetta in 6 years. I've had the same Landcruiser through all this - how do women survive with the horrible habits they have when driving? I don't get it.
But yeah, MK3 Jettas are chic cars for the most part - but who cares when you get 32MPG & I get 12? --I'd rock a chic car for the MPG too.

I dunno, I have had pretty good luck up until now. Water Pump and timing belt with the thermostat was just routine maintenance. The front brakes I thought were good, the one day they just died for some reason, still it was semi-expected to happen eventually.
The only things I had to fix that I didn't plan on was the brake MC, the clutch (partially my fault for driving with an oil leak, but still the tranny plug has a retarded design) And the suspension, shocks and struts wear out, but springs should not break like these do.
Theres not much that can go wrong now, all the bushings are good, the only thing I can think of is maybe the steering rack. It makes noises like its low on fluid, but its not. Still works just fine though. Its pretty easy to get out, and if I were to get a new one I would just get one for $30 from the salvage yard, not that big of a deal.
