As yet it looks pretty much the same, as I've only been working on mechanical problems. Once I get all the mechanical stuff in good shape I'm gonna start on the cosmetics. Starting with a full detail and waxing. :)Leave a comment:

Welcome to the board.
So long as you operate with respect, a thick skin, and an intent to contribute meaningful posts you should blend well.
Cosmoline can be easily cured if you have access to a decent parts washer.
Good luck, happy posting.Leave a comment:

Well, I can thank Motorwerks BMW of Bloomington MN for that. That was the dealership that ordered it. I have all the original papers. Unless it was supposed to be removed by the detailers, as it was dealer traded to Sears Imports for the customer and detailed there I'm sure. Maybe I should go down and tell them to clean up the mess they made! :curse: Wonder what kind of expression they'd get on their faces? Lol. Maybe not such a good idea.
Makes me feel better to know it wasn't abuse like getting crap sprayed on it though.Leave a comment:

That is cosmoline. Its a protectant that BMW put on the engine to keep it from corroding on the boatride over. Its common that it wasnt washed off when the car was sold for some reason. Good luck getting rid of it now, that shit becomes permanent (i.e. almost needs bead blasting) after a while.
So you met blunt? Hope your ass heals up soon.Leave a comment:

Nice to see a new guy - welcome.
Like B said - thick skin, don't worry about having the last word, search before you ask, & you'll do just fine.
I worked in new car dealerships as a kid - new Hondas came covered in cosmoline & we would use a weed sprayer filled with diesel, spray the car, let sit for 5 minutes, then wash with soap & water. I was fortunate that the cosmo on my E30 was very light so when I let it soak under diesel it came off easy. Might work for you.Leave a comment:

welcome joseph, pay no attention to this freak mudflaps.
the only thing he knows less about than cars is his own sexuality.
that "varnish" on the engine compartment is cosmoline that they spray on it as a protectant when new. you can get it off but its a pain in the ass.
stick around and keep thick skin. there are a lot of knowledgeable guys on here and some who specialized in the M42.Leave a comment:

Only picks I have are from when I went to look at it before buying.
I paid $1000 for it. It needs a wheel bearing I believe, and the heater fan motor has to be replaced (already tested, it is a bad motor). Other than that it has little problems like antenna is broken, handle for sunroof is broken, speedometer isn't working (sender wire has corrosion on it by differential), and possible other issues I'll discover once the wheel bearing has been replaced and it can be driven normally.
200k miles, one family car (shows 1 owner on carfax). The previous owners took very good care of it, note the interior shot. Only rust is on the front by the fog lights, and on the driver side fender. Underside is clean, no rust there. I'll post an engine shot too.
Edit: Oh, and it has LSD as well.Last edited by josephb983; 11-22-2007, 01:32 AM.Leave a comment:
