to all you truck offroaders out there. opinions needed.

my buddy wants to get a JEEP wrangler 4x4 (TJ 1996-2006) for a DD and take it offroading on the weekends... but concerned that his DJ(ing) gears wont fit at the back.

so now.. he is looking at a 2002 FORD explorer sport XLT. but he was reading the reviews and wasnt very pleased...

    his budget 15k

opinions? if it was you... which one?

any more suggestions on 4x4's as a DD and weekend truck? (anything better than the explorer...?)

    thanks.

For 15K you could get an XJ in decent shape and do some nice mods to make it more offroad friendly. XJ's are a ton better offroad than a TJ IMO I've owned both.

XJ is a cherokee, and every jeep ever made has the two letter reference ie, CJ XJ TJ YJ ZJ JK and so on, some good forums to visit are jeepaholics.com, jeepforums.com and jeepsunlimited.com the best forum for XJs is naxja.org

He could pick up a used CJ scrambler, they are great off road, and have loads of rear storage space. Hell of a truck with the 360 in it. My buddy's turned his 35s with no problem. TONS of aftermarket parts for cheap too. With 15k he could buy a solid one and put on a lift & new shoes...

more difficult to find a clean scrambler though plus it has leaf springs front and rear which are the devil when offroading

                      seriously? 15k?

93-95 Land Cruiser with factory diff locks.
You can pick them up for 8k all day long. Use another 2.5k for a lift and new tires.
