GPS systems.. Anyone have experience with them?

What are the best systems out there? I've seen several, and I'm thinking of adding one to the m3 once it is roadable again. Input, thoughts?

TomTom or Garmin, Garmin is #1. Seriously.

I know there are shitloads out there, and for very enticing prices. But Garmin has been doing navigation systems forever, and the TomTom units are really good, too. Stick with either one of those, and you'll be golden.

I have the TOM TOM 910 and love it. I liked the Garmins when I was looking at these units but ended up liking the way the maps looked on the TOM TOM's over the garmin maps. Altough that was over a year and half ago now. So I am sure there has been plenty of changes since.

I do know the magellans suck. They are hard to navigate through the functions for some reason and get what functions you are looking for.

I'm actually using Microsoft Streets and Trips 2006.

No complaints. I'll probably buy 2008 soon, unless it give me drama running it in 800x600 on the carputer.

Ted, I have a Kenwood stand alone Nav screen. 8" wide screen, excellent condition...no brain, so you would want to buy their hard drive based nav brain. It will fit beautifully in the bottom of the center console, all vinyl wrapped, kinda like Curts.

The thing is badass, I just need money right now! I will get you the brain at my cost, in fact, if you wanna go Kenwood...but I have seen the nav brains go for $100 under my cost on Ebay.

Call me or pop in sometime, check it out.

              Closing SOON!

Do not get the Magellan 4K series. I got my dad the Magellan Maestro 4050 for his birthday. The GPS, even with the newest firmware, is SLOOOOOW. Prior to the flash, it REALLY sucked a wang. Sure if you live in East Bumfuck it'll be plenty accurate and quick enough, but route recalculation in busy areas (NYC, NJ) is agonizingly slow. I've used a Garmin, and it has way faster processing and route recalculation.

Luke I will for sure stop by after xmas - hopefully it won't be gone. Can I hook up some other input to that screen as well (i.e. a laptop?)

A buddy of mine is running a 8" touch screen lcd in the location of the front ashtray area. He has mounted a PC in the trunk and runs megasquirt mainly but has NAV software he uses as well. He even has a wireless card and the car has its own email address even. He has a USB plug in on the center console for USB devices. Once he finishes the install (making a surround for the LCD) it will be awesome.

I just bought a Magellan 4040, with all the bells and whistles, well not the voice recognition that now I have to pay $100 to unlock unless I find someone who wants to share?? I'm happy with it !!
