    OT:1998 Mercedes Benz C43 AMG $7500

    ************************* 47 PICS ON PAGE 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*****************************

    Hey guys!

I bought this car about a month ago, drove it daily to work for a while and decided it's not for me. It needs work, but drives nice and my asking price is cheap. For those who don't know the C43 has a 4.3l handbuild AMG V8 that makes 302hp. It's a riot to drive and is one of the fastest cars I've ever driven. It has 117,xxx miles on it. they only made about 1400 of them so they are damn rare too which was one of the reasons I became so interested in finding one. Besides Drew's (expo5.0) silver one I don't know if there are any other ones in minnesota. This is a rare opportunity to get into one of these for under $10k. It needs some love but has a lot of potential.

    The good:

-Very strong engine. Drove 1200 miles without missing a beat.

    -tranny shifts smooth

    -new shifter box

    -seats/interior are in good shape

    - o2 sensors replaced in september

    -harmonic balancer replaced in october

-synthetic oil change done like 20 miles ago

-i had some bridgestone blizzaks mounted when i got the oil change

    -new tabs

    The bad:

-when the harmonic balancer was replaced a leak was identified near the water pump. It must be a small leak because I have never had to top off the coolant, and neither had the previous owner. the part is $220, and it's 2.5 hours of labor time. the pump is located on the top front of the motor, and I have detailed instructions on how to replace it. Looks like a straight forward enough job but since I'm not keeping the car, I don't have much desire to work on it.

-paint is dented and scratched. It bothers me quite a bit, but you might not care. I have found no rust, except for a spot developing in the trunk near the spare tire.

-various odds and ends broken. cup holder, some light bulbs, shifter knob is loose, crack on the wood trim on passenger side, the display on the stock stereo is missing characters etc.

-the orthapedic part of the seats work off and on. From what i've read there is a vacuum junction box under the hood that commonly cracks and can cause this issue, but I havent looked into it any further.

-needs the switch on the brake pedal replaced. will cause an abs error if not replaced.

-wheel in spare tire area is cracked. will need to be replaced

-engine compartment is goopy in places. maybe a valve cover gasket leaking?

I'm sure there is more things that need to be done, but this is what I've noticed in my short ownership, and what i knew of before I bought it. If I think of anything else I will update this thread.

Other than the stuff mentioned above it seems like a solid car. The things i don't like about it are kinda nit picky I know, but after driving this for a couple weeks i missed my E36 328i so much that i couldn't even fathom selling it for the Mercedes. I don't really like the driving position, or the build quality of the interior components (the way the buttons press etc.) plus I realized that the scratches and dents were bothering me more than I thought initially. It has lots of character though, and lots of cool options like auto dimming mirrors, heated windshield squirters etc. I listed it for $8k on Autotrader, but I just want to get my money back, and what I've put into it. Not trying to profit. I would take $7500 or something very close to it on the spot. I really would like this to go to a fellow MN car guy, it's such a rare car and they look awesome modded.

I want to make sure that whoever buys it is comfortable with their purchase, and that everything wrong with the car has been explained so there is no misunderstandings. I have nothing to hide, the car can be taken in for an inspection at a shop of a potential buyers choice, but my price is pretty firm, and much below typical market value for one of these cars. With a little bit of time and money thrown at it, it would be a very nice car. But make no mistake it could be driven everyday the way it is. I have pictures from the previous owner, but I will take my own when I get home tonight. Any questions respond to this thread, pm, or call my cell at 612.327.5680. Thanks! -Aaron

Holy sidebolsters Batman! those things are huge!

Luv the car though, I have always wanted one of these. There's a guy in my town with a silver one and custom plates that say '302 BHP'. Good luck with the sale!

Can't take trades unfortunately, I'm completely upside down on this car and buying a house in March.

                  Thanks for your interest!

That is a badass car no doubt and the price is great... however...

The motor is not an AMG. They simply lifted the e430 motor and dropped it into the C Class.

If you want your money out of that, you need to seriously clean it up. Inside & out. It looks haggered. :(

The engine is definitely based on the e430 motor, but is changed quite a bit, and hand assembled by AMG before going into the C43. The engine makes only 279hp in the e430, but 302hp in the C43.

"both the C43 and E55 AMGs now flaunt brawny V8s of 4.3 and 5.5 litres respectively. Both engines are based on Mercedes' new 24-valve 279bhp E430 motor, although with AMG's attentions both produce significantly more torque and horsepower than standard."

Thanks for the replies everyone, I will have proper pictures washed and cleaned this afternoon. Thank you.

I did read the whole thread.
You're upside down, in a car you don't want to keep. You plan on buying a house, and the C43 needs more work/time that you're not willing to put into it.

Posting photos of the car, in that state... with horrendously dirty exterior/interior doesn't instill any extra faith in the ability of the car to clean up.
Yes, I know its winter in MN. :)

When do I get to say "I told you so"? ;) :p

That being said, don't think I'm not semi-considering throwing you an offer. :o
