You'll need a Torrent Client to get things rolling. I suggest uTorrent: http://www.utorrent.com/

After that, you're looking for torrents that have a decent amount of Seeders and leechers. The more people seeding (people that finished the download) the quicker your speeds will be.

Yep, if you're behind a firewall make sure you open up the appropriate port for Azureus. That will help things out.
