    Bodyshops suck HARD

I dropped my '95 325is off last Wednesday to have the hood painted and replaced while I was skiing in West Virginia. I mentioned to the owner of the bodyshop, whom I had dealt with before through Precision Motorcars, where I used to work, that the coupe and sedan had different hoods. He seemed to think I was an idiot for mentioning this.

Well, he went on vacation while my car was to be worked on. I received no call before the weekend, though the car should have been completed friday afternoon.

I got back to GA Sunday, so I dropped by with the assistance of my dad to see if they had finished it and left the key or something. No such luck, it was behind the gate and still had the old hood.

Monday I had to borrow a car and went to school. I got a voicemail while in class to call them back. I did this about noon. They said they painted the hood they received, but when they went to fit it there was an issue. Guess what? It was the sedan hood. I also asked why they did not make sure the hood fit properly before they painted it? no reply. I asked them to be sure to check the next one, as aftermarket parts are not perfect. They know they are supposed to do this, but don't.

Tuesday I drop by and pay for it, and tell them to leave the key in it as soon as they are done. Wednesday noonish I call and the owner is short with me that the car is not yet ready that he would call when it was done. I got a ride to the body shop and my car was sitting in front, done. no call.

They said nothing much when I came in, but they wanted me to sign the release. they were mad that i wanted to look at the car first.

    I look.
    I am a little perturbed.

Fish eyes, trash, sand scratches and swirls. They did not even clean under the hood where all the dust goes after wet sanding.

the kicker is the tops of the fenders. near the hinges there are gashes in the paint. it is obvious the damage was done while the hood was being fitted.

I walk in and the owner wants his goon to deal with me so he does not have to. I tell him there are two gashes on the fenders. the goon has a preprogrammed response that they were already there. they were not. I said, no they were not there. the owner storms out to look. I also asked how they get so much dirty in the paint? He storms away saying he can use some touchup, but that is all he would do. He then points out other blemishes on the car, sarcastically asking if he should fix those too. then I ask him why he had to be this way. up to this point I was merely pointing the issue out. He walked away and before he slammed the door said, "because I am a dick" and was gone.

i walked in got my keys and left.

Now, I have worked in a bodyshop. The owner of the shop at which I worked respected me for my attention to detail and the fact that I would let nothing leave with blemishes and what not. I know what is what and what causes what and how to do any of the work. From fixing metal damage to wet sanding and buffing... it is not rocket science.

At this point I disputed the charge through Wachovia. I am writting to the BBB and a local newspaper, Around Canton.

What kind of business owner does that to a customer? I think he is a piece of shit.

    What do you think?

You're making the right move with the BB and newspaper. Sorry about your hood.

You should not have paid until you were satisfied with how the job was done with your car. Good luck with your horrible experience with them now in getting a resolution in your favor.

There is no such thing as an e30 coupe. You have a 2 door sedan.

And who told you there was a difference between hoods?

Wow! E30 police at it's best! Should have read the year though....

Oh and no kidding on the "coupe" deal. Btw what does the registration on your car say? Mine says coupe... even though it isn't.

Pm me the nam of the shop. I don't want to make the same mistake, or let anyone else in Georgia.
                Yours truly,

Yeah, I should read more carefully. I guess I assumed e30 because this is an e30 board. Oh well. And yeah, kids these days need to know what coupe actually means. The real meaning of the word is disappearing. Even your state doesn't know its a sedan (or probably any for that matter). But I don't have a registration, mine is stolen. I'm in the process of switching all VIN tags and getting it registered as something else.

The shop was Howard's Auto Body. No reserve about posting that.

Normally I would have paid after, but I needed my car back and wanted to get it paid for incase I had to pick it up after hours.

Even if I cannot get my money back I am going to raise a stink.

that's what happens when you hire unskilled workers so you can pay them less $$$ and pocket the rest. the owner was playing a game of "let's see what he will notice" when you came to pick up the car.

i too do bodywork for a living, dumb ass should have checked and fitted the hood first, maybe even after cut in, but the body guy should have checked it!!

rookie mistake on the fender scratches. put some fucking tape on the edges...maybe ask for some help from a second person so you don't scratch the hood/fenders. again unskilled workers......sorry to stereotype but usually illegal Mexicans (unskilled workers) are doing the work so the shady shop can pocket more money, since they are willing to work for lower than normal wages.

the writer/owner should have Q.C.'ed the car before delivery....obviously he doesn't care about repeat customers or his rep. too bad for him, that kind of attitude will get you nowhere in this business.

no calls to update you on the car....shitty customer service!!!

read the paperwork, see if there is anything about releasing them from defects in the work after you sign. some have a clause like that.
most reputable shops don't and give a lifetime guarantee on the repairs. reporting them to the BBB won't do much really if the owner of the shop just doesn't care. dispute the CC bill, and say the work was done unsatisfactorily. then if they want the $$$ for the repair, they will have to fix it to your standards.

                      good luck,
                      greg

Greg, I feel you, man. The workers at this shop are redneck meth-head motherfuckers that don't give a shit and care even less when you ask for specifics.

They did not even buff out all their sanding marks! Its also funny that he bashed the rest of my car, which by the way is in great condition. I planned to have him respray my bumpers (if anyone knows the <95 e36 have gay gray at the bottom) as well as the nose panel and side skirts that i just picked up.

I worked with a guy that does fast bumper repair at used car dealers. our work in the parking lot turned out better than these guys do in a booth. You know why? We gave a shit about our work and rep.

I am going after this asshole.

You paid. You took the car way. Great. But it doesn't mean it's over. Go to small claims and sue the guy. It will probably cost you a few $ to open a docket, but it'll be priceless to see the owner's face...

I am familiar with this. If Wachovia does not back me up I will do just that. The cool thing is the law allows for compensatory claim to be added to the value of services or whatever it is you are suing for. That means if the limit is $10k, which I think it still is, you sue for no less than $10,000.

I will take him to court if it comes down to it. They have fucked other people, they messed up a car we sent them... should have known.
