No one is free, no one has ever been free.
Hemingway said it best. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.”

              I'm bored in class - I'll bite.

That guy is funny as hell.

And freedom is a relative statement.

You are truly "free" to do whatever you want. You are free to jump off a bridge and try to fly, but you'll fall down and die. You are also free to go 200+ on the freeway, but you'll probably go to jail.

You are confusing freedom with consequences of action. You are truly free to do whatever you want. Some consequences are imposed by nature, some are imposed for social order. I know you're all into the anarchist shit, but a world without consequences to actions is not a fun place. Look at war torn countries in Africa/south america. In the US (as well as western europe, canada, or any other country that isn't entirely socialized) you are relatively more free than the rest of the world. I never feel like I'm being oppressed, but maybe that's because I don't have any desire to shoot people, do elicit drugs, or generally fuck up someone elses situation.

Why don't you shed the "slave chair", go live in the woods, and be truly free?

First off, I'm not into "anarchist shit" I'm simply trying to convey that this "freedom" mentality Americans share is just laughable. s0urce brings up a great point... which forest could I go to?

And no, I'm not confusing freedom with consequences of action. In a truly free society we wouldn't be afraid of the consequences setup by the bitter old bastards who do all the voting because we're all to busy/lazy to do so. I shouldn't have to obey laws that only effect my life, because this is MY LIFE. If I want to overdose on heroin, then dammit I'm going to do it. If I want to commit suicide then I'm going to. Fuck all these laws. The seatbelt law is a good one here... for the record I would wear one anyway. Anyone dumb enough not to wear one deserves to die.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

As Doug puts it- The only way to truly be free is to admit to yourself that you're totally fucked, then you're free to move about this bullshit system.

So I think I'll sit in my slave chair long enough to make the big bucks, so that I can do whatever the fuck I want because the world is going to end anyway, and it's already started.

You're introducing fear, but you're free to be fearful.

Also, everything you just stated, you are more than capable of doing. You think you can't OD on heroin? You think you can't shoot yourself in the head? Just because something is illegal doesn't mean it doesn't happen, or can't. How much illegal shit has everyone done and never gotten nailed for? think about it...

I'm not arguing that we are totally free, but your idea of "your life, your rules" is a pretty jaded perception of reality. Even in the cave man days, if you start offing your buddies bad shit will happen to you. This is before the "old bastards" a.k.a. "the man" got involved in anything - so there is a natural limit on your freedom.
