So today while leaving work, I was driving my Acura Integra and was waiting behind a van. We were leaving a parking lot onto a small street. Suddenly I notice that they are backing up and being as it is that my horn doesn't work (I know, it's the next thing I'm fixing) I switch gears to reverse and back up as fast as I can. I heard them hit me, but didn't feel it, and so I just stopped and proceeded to get out of my car. The van starts to drive off while I was getting out because I wanted to see if there was damage. I notice a small 1" crack on my bumper cover.
I decide to park and call my Dad and while parking a guy came over and told me that he saw it, and I should've chased them down. I notice them come back and park at my work, and so I go inside my work where I saw one of the people in the car go and tell her that they hit my car, and she went next door (where the driver and mom were at). I go in the back office to grab some paper and look up at the camera to see the three of them walking towards their car so run outside. I walk up to the driver's side door and ask them if they noticed that they hit me, and instantly the mom (who was sitting in the passenger's seat) jumps out the car, yelling explicit words and calling it BS, claiming that I was trying to get money out of them. Everyone in the area (this is a small shopping center) is staring at this point, and I'm on the phone with my Dad who tells me to just get her information and find the witness and get his.
After about 15 minutes of trying to tell her not to yell and asking her to be polite because I was doing so, I finally get a license plate and number from her (which I can't verify because the van decided to leave
) ). So I go back into my work and try to find the witness, but he already left, so I decide to take a look at our cameras. Our cameras only caught me backing up, but luckily the business next to us has cameras on the roof and so tomorrow they're going to get the tape for me.
Has anyone ever gone through anything like this? Any advice as to what to do? My dad told me that if I don't have a witness I'm practically SOL, but with the tape can't I do something? And I know I probably should've called the cops, but when I saw how little damage it was I was hoping I didn't have to bother getting law enforcement involved, but wish I would've after the way that lady decided to bitch at me.
