Oppo DVD 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player

Anyone got one of these? I was over at my friends house and he had this oppo dv-980h dvd player and it plays Divx burned CD-R's and up-coverts to 1080p it was great to watch Top Gear on a 60 inch Sony. And it looked pretty good even for being Divx format.

I personally think the upscaling dvd players are not alot better than normal 520p dvd players. I dont think the upscaling does alot but im interested to here what you guys think. I sell them btw, good to see blue ray has won out in the end over HD, Toshiba has stoped ordering parts for HD DVD players

Now that you know what won (Blu-ray), I wouldn't bother buying a player that will make your DVD's look better. Just start buying Blu-ray from now on. Most Blu-ray players will up-convert DVD's for you, so...

There is only 4 blu ray players that can handle divx and they are all in the $1000 doller range. So for now i'l still wait a little bit for blu-ray players to come out and get better for the price.

Buying a Blue-Ray player right now would be stupid anyway, unless it's a PS3. Now that Blu-Ray has the hold on the HD video market, the prices on the players aren't going to be coming down anytime soon. PS3 sales are also expected to skyrocket, and all those stores like Target and Wal-Mart that have 2 dozen of them collecting dust on their shelves are going to start running out of them REAL fast.

I think it depends more on how well the file was encoded. I watch topgear on 50" plasma and it looks fine. Then if I watch 5th gear (half the file size) it looks with artifacts. Was never a fan of "upconverting' anything, as if the source is shitty, it will still be shitty , but maybe polished a bit ;)

The upcoverters in Blu-Ray players, aren't as good as the processing in the Denon stuff.

Why is it stupid? And why would someone that doesn't want a PS3 buy something loud and over-priced that can be done well with a stand-alone unit that comes with a nice remote? They are cheap enough (especially with employee discounts) for most people that can afford a nice 50" plasma to afford a player.

If you're going to invest in a 1080p panel, you may as well invest in a decent Blu-Ray player. As mentioned above, if you're throwing down for a nice 1080p plasma panel, you're not going to hurting for dough for a decent Blu-Ray player. A friend of mine just got the nicer Pioneer Elite player ($999), and I can definitely tell a difference between that and the PS3 that he used to be running (some of it may have to do with the Anthem A/V processor that it's running through, although the PS3 was as well). You have to pay to play if you're going to be an early adapter... but from my experience, it's def worth it for a nice Blu-Ray player now.

Back on topic. I'd wait a week or so before buying an HD-DVD player if you're going to buy one to up-scale dvd collections... prices will be plummeting soon.
