Missile Hits Dying US Spy Satellite

WASHINGTON (AP) - A Navy missile soaring 130 miles above the Pacific smashed a dying and potentially deadly U.S. spy satellite Wednesday and probably destroyed a tank carrying 1,000 pounds of toxic fuel, officials said. Officials had expressed cautious optimism that the missile would hit the satellite, which was the size of a school bus. But they were less certain of hitting the smaller, more problematic fuel tank, whose contents posed what Bush administration officials deemed a potential health hazard to humans if it landed intact.
In a statement announcing that the Navy missile struck the satellite, the Pentagon said, "Confirmation that the fuel tank has been fragmented should be available within 24 hours." It made no mention of early indications, but a defense official close to the situation said later that officials monitoring the collision saw what appeared to be an explosion, indicating that the fuel tank was hit.
The USS Lake Erie, armed with an SM-3 missile designed to knock down incoming missiles—not orbiting satellites—launched the attack at 10:26 p.m. EST, according to the Pentagon. It hit the satellite about three minutes later as the spacecraft traveled in polar orbit at more than 17,000 mph.
Because the satellite was orbiting at a relatively low altitude at the time it was hit by the missile, debris will begin to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere immediately, the Pentagon statement said.
"Nearly all of the debris will burn up on re-entry within 24-48 hours and the remaining debris should re-enter within 40 days," it said.
The use of the Navy missile amounted to an unprecedented use of components of the Pentagon's missile defense system, designed to shoot down hostile ballistic missiles in flight—not kill satellites.
The operation was so extraordinary, with such intense international publicity and political ramifications, that Defense Secretary Robert Gates—not a military commander—was to make the final decision to pull the trigger.
The government organized hazardous materials teams, under the code name "Burnt Frost," to be flown to the site of any dangerous or otherwise sensitive debris that might land in the United States or elsewhere.
Also, six federal response groups that are positioned across the country by the Federal Emergency Management Agency have been alerted but not activated, FEMA spokesman James McIntyre said. "These are purely precautionary and preparedness actions only," he said.

the reasoning to shoot this thing down is that hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide are hazardous to our health. this is true. however this shit will hit critical temp during re-entry and just burn up. the only reasoning is to flex a little ballistic missile defense (BMD) muscle against china. and as a byproduct, we are alienating russia and sowing the seeds for another fucking arms race.

We've been shooting SM3s for years now. This is not a new system, in fact, it just takes a couple computer patches (and one really fucking expensive missile), and any AEGIS DDG/CG can do this.

You are right though, it's just a way to flex and show off. Good training for the techs/watchstanders though.

This satellite was a failure from launch. This satellite was a spy satellite with a top secrete mission. It never properly jetted itself into correct orbit. Its the size of a school bus and weighing in at just over 5k lbs. Even when the space shuttle came in burning up, a debris field was strewn all over the place. The likely hood of this hitting the US, Mexico was pretty high. With everyone so critical with the government, they had to act instead of react if it would have hit. With out certain of where it would hit they took the roll to act. This rocket used was from old stock retrofitted with a new guidance head. It was a heat seeking 3 stage ballistics missile.

The flack started when China a few months ago fired one of their new style missiles to take out a working satellite. This showed how advanced the Chinese has gotten with missile technology. Now they are saying that we had planned this from the beginning. I want to say our debunked satellite was launched back in 1996 without looking it up. That a lot of pre-planning if that is what it was.

Remember, as long as the world keeps reproducing at alarming numbers, countries will always have to look at others to keep resources available to their own nation. Thats why there will never be peace and such arms races are just that. Everyone wants to be the greatest and America has held that for a long time. Many nations would love to see us fall, but other nations need us to sustain their quality of life. With the Economy the way it is, the housing market and overspending, we are losing that hold on the world market. Soon we will fall like Rome, from within!

                  Missile alone $10 million + mission/project = 40 to 60 million...

I agree with 99.9% of what you said. But that missile was just a standard SM3, our BMD missile. No new guidance, nothing different.

still a hell of a lot cheaper than that thing hitting say LA or NYC and Al Sharpton getting a hold of it. :)

Because a debunked satellite falling from space at 17000 miles an hour can hit only the hood of those cities...

ill have to dig up that info, but there were 3 missiles that were retrofitted to the standard SM3 to be able to do this feat. They did not want to share the latest rocket technology because that would expose what the US has been working on with the missile defense system. Poland has just joined our defense field that Russia is really ticked at that. Russia is flexing their power do to the soring oil prices and China demanding tons of raw goods. Russia sees it as a way to gain back the power that they lost during the falling of the Berlin wall.

Fixed. We still spend about $60B on the Star Wars project. Because, you know all those insurgents...they have lots of ICBMs sitting next to their car bombs. Biggest waste of money in the gov't currently. There hasn't been a credible threat from ICBMs in 20 years, and there isn't going to be one. If the war on terror has taught us anything, it's that the future will not look like the cold war with lots of high-tech doodads and fancy gizmos.
