I sent off the signed title to the wife's work with signature service showing the date it was recieved, and her signature. I've also since moved to Eden Prairie so they don't know where I live anymore to harass me. I believe it's over and done with.

Lesson learned: high mileage old automatic Mercedes are scary. And never sell a car before you have the title in hand.

Any German car out of warranty is scary, glad to hear they left you alone (or can't find you anymore)

i feel like sharing my story because i'm bored and alone... the e28 i just bought was an "as is" situation. The "owner" lost the title so they told me (and I figured as much) that I could just go apply for a salvage title. Well, I found out that that is not how it works [in Michigan] so I had to call the people and explain to them that they had to first apply for a duplicate title in order for rightful ownership of the vehicle to transfer to me, which they got all flustered over. In the end, it turned out that the lady selling it wasn't even the rightful owner of it and so on and so forth and it just got way to confusing for me to comprehend.

so, if you're going to sell or buy a car, for god's sake make sure the title is ready to transfer as soon as money is exchanged!!!

As long as it's agreed that the car was sold "as-is" then there really isn't anything else to discuss about it unless he wants to sue you in court. I've seen judges throw out cases like this even before he allows the defendant to speak. If he files a lawsuit, I would countersue for lost wages and punative damages for the threats made.

As for the tags, any time the buyer needs to get the car home and you want to be helpful, follow him home and then reclaim the tags. NOTE: In some states the tags actually stay with the car that they were originally assigned for. If you live in one of those states, then your bill of sale pretty much gets you off of the hook if the new owner fails to register the car. I would just make sure that your local motor vehicles has a way to completely absolve you from reponsibility of ownership if they never register it in their name.

With the way that this guy is using profanity and thretening you and such, this is a direct indication that he really does not have a leg to stand on. He might have been drunk at the time, made a stupid mistake and now he is frantically trying to find a way to undo the situation. If you are summoned to court, you might even get an opportunity to send in a written response along with your bill of sale causing the case to be dismissed without even going to trial.
