    Carbon Fiber question

So I'm the structures guy for my senior design project in Aeronautical Engineering, and I'm trying to design the wing right now. Does anyone know the weight of high-modulus carbon fiber cloth per square ft/yard/whatever INCLUDING RESIN?

I can find lots of info on cloth weight, but that doesn't include the weight of the resin. (the airplane's only 36 lbs, so the weight of the resin spread over 18 square feet will add up quickly)

if you are buyin prepreg they shoud give you the resin to cloth ratio... if its gonna be a wet setup its up to you as to how much resin you use per foot^2... less is more

I will ask a friend who designs and builds high end mountain and road bikes for a living. They have been using some CF lately on some builds but mainly they use aeronautical grade titanium for their products.

The reason you can't find an specific number is because no one number exists. It all depends on how much resin you use. Any pre-preg will have a set amount and the weight per ft^2 should be available from the manufacturer. If you're laying it up wet, it all depends on how much resin you use.

YES and I don't get deals either, but who needs to when I can ride any of his dozen bikes laying around... :D To bad I don't live close to him or I would go on bike rides A LOT, although he might not miss a bike if I took one for a period of time to ride !! LOL

On another note he tells me that it is near impossible to give a weight on per sq.ft/yd of CF with resin as it has been mentioned by CorvallisBMW. It depends on the use and need of the particular job and how many layers it is going to need. That and what type of concentration of resin will need to be used as well. He says that CF alone has high tinsel strength but is not a tough material unless it is weaved with kevlar or regular glass as well as what type of resin mix you are using for the design. He said that straight CF is really easy to fray from the slightest nick and without kevlar or regular glass it will fail easily. Sorry it doesn't help much

That's what I had thought I heard about cf. My statics teacher related it to concrete: Very high in shear strength, but quite poor in tensile strength. The kevlar weave is similar to using rebar with concrete.
