    Where to visit in NC?

I'm wanting to move to NC within the next 5 years. I'm heading up in may for vintage at the vineyards. Here's the thing - I'm leaving on the 21st and coming back on the 28th - so I've got like 4 days to spend outside of winston salem. Whats a good couple of places to check out? I mat hit up the outer banks - primarily to do some skimboarding. Also, I'd like to stop at at least one good skatepark while in the area. Any other suggestions?

Also - how long of a drive is it across state? I'm used to texas where i can drive in a straight line for 12 hours and still be in texas. What's the avg distance between major cities?

2 hours from Wilmington to Raleigh, another 2 to Winston Salem. 4 hours from Wilmington to Charlotte.

NC is a really cool state. I had an internship in Wilmington last summer, and living by the ocean for the summer was awesome. Great beaches in the east, great mountains in the west.

        ...Don't live in NC

        (Former upstate NYer speaking)
Me: "I can't wait to redline my car!"
Mark: "Didn't you just break a rocker arm?"
Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
        Mark: "You never will."

Care to elaborate? I sure as hell don't want to live in upstate NY.

I like NC. I've only lived in 2 states though, the other is Alabama. NC is not bad, but...Not really touristy.. Not much to see. Topsail is my favorite place near the beach.
edit: I know of an existing skatepark somewhere in greensboro, called 916 park or something along the line. Don't go to Denton. One piece of advice...Especially in a BMW.

I live in Winston and don't mind it too much(originally from Macon, GA). A few too many good ole boys for my taste but beautiful state I have to say. Mt. Airy is a nice day trip, with some good driving roads and mountain roads heading into VA. Up here at ASU there are a lot of good roads for driving and the blue ridge is right outside of Boone. Plenty of slopes too if you are into snowboarding.

Haven't been out to the coast so don't know too much about that. If you have any questions about Winston-Salem or the Boone area you can ask me.

I visited Wilmington several years back and really liked that area. Fairly small city but has a upbeat feel to it. Great night life and of course its a short drive to the beaches from downtown. They have a huge movie filming industry there so it is not out of the norm to run into hollywood stars and such when out on the town. I would not hesitate moving there as I thought about it back then.

Good luck with the weather for skimboarding this time of year.... its a nice time of year to visit the beach but I dont know 'bout getting in the water. The mountains wouldn't be a bad place to visit right now... nice roads to driver around Boone or near the VA border. You can hit up a Canes game in Raleigh if you are into hockey.

I really like living here, the job market is great (esp. for the computer field). Buying a house around Raleigh could be a great investment as the whole area is booming with new developments and expanding like crazy.

Great golf and seafood too. It's defiantly not the stereotypical south. A lot of people move there from New England (Yankees games are always broadcasted), and there's a decent college aged population there too.

The biggest gripe I had with the place was that there is no big athletic team in the area, and concerts don't come around.

For the record I'm going in may. It should be warm enough by then eh?

I think I'm going to re arrange my schedule. I'm going to go to winston-salem for V@V - then head out to kill devil hills for a day or so. I guess after that I'll check out wilmington and head back home.

most of the e30 crowd in NC seems to be out in winston
NC is a great place to live, its fairly low cost living, theres some good stuff to see, the mountains are cool the beaches are some of the best around.
obx are too touristy i prefer the wilmington area (wrightsville beach is where i go).
it shouldnt take more than 5 hours to drive clear across the state its 2 hours down 40 from wilmington to Raleigh, and about 2.5 from there to the western end.
but matte30 is right, there are alot of god damned yankees down here nowadays.

what are you looking to do when youre here?
