quick poll... im just curious as to what you would do...

lets say youre hired for a job. its an off the books, low paying, very physically demanding job. lets say you work this job for 8 months diligently with no talk of a raise, benefits, anything. lets say you tell your boss you quit, you dont want to work there anymore, but tell him you'll stay until he finds someone else.

lets say it appears the boss isn't trying very hard at all to find a replacement, and nearly a month goes by from your quit date and there is still no talk of a replacement. what would you do?

business is business. If he was that nice of a guy he would have respected your request rather than take advantage of your kindness.

If he had to lay you off, do you think that he would keep paying you for months cause you haven't found another job?

No, he would fire you one day with out warning and hand you your crappy paycheck.

None of the above. I'd tell him my final day, warn him as it comes up and then leave whether he's found someone to replace me or not.

fuck him give him a week to find a guy, 2 if you are really nice guy.

Do you get 2 weeks notice before you get laid off. I am in construction an I generaly know when lay off is looming but I never get much more than a day or 2 notice.

Off the book jobs, in the owners eyes are just temporary help that gets them through a particular time in the their business. If you have told him a certain date that is/was your last day, so be it. If it has passed, tell him ASAP that a certain day ( in the very near future ) will be your last period. Once that day has come and gone stop showing up.

EDIT -- I chose pancakes since I am hungry.

DUDE, it's off the books. you think that is going to be a good reference if your trying to get a legit job? If i was a legit employer i would not higher someone who worked off-the-books (and didn't pay taxes) because that is a red flag of respectible values and trustworthyness. don't worry about it. sounds like it wasn't worth your time anyways. and if he never offered a raise for you to stay or anything along those lines to affirm your value to his company, he can go fuck himself. he's shady to begin with, it's best not to get your fingerprints on that trainwreck.

think of it this way, you said it was a physically demanding job yes? because he kept it off of the books, if you had gotten injured while working, you would have been up shit creek. ...what if you were injured to the point where you could not work for a whole year? because it was off the books, he wasn't paying insurance that would have covered you and entitled you to workman's comp. Because it was Off the Books, he wasn't paying into your social security (employers are obligated to match your withholdings to the government, you just happen to get yours back in the form of a tax refund if you have no tax liability) so when your old and retired and you are living off of SS, you will get less because your past employer wasn't paying their share.

just some stuff to think about. you did the right thing by leaving that company.
