King's Letter from Birmingham Jail is one of the most literate and enlightened statements of the latter 20th. Century. What is missed in most of the discussions of his persona, activism, and public pronouncements is the level of intellectual content and knowledge of history, philosophy, and religion that they reveal. He was one one of the foremost theologians of his day and his vision of the spritual nature of man as manifested in his daily activities is completely missed by most people. Like all such people he was far more radical than the media could even comprehend. He received so many death threats that he would become paralyzed with fear. King took to marching in the middle of the front line with everyone locking arms. What appeared to be a display of solidarity was King being held up because he was weak in the knees with fear and sometimes incontinent. Still he never stopped marching. His statements about the ever enlarging Viet Nam conflict were so radical that his death was a blessing for the establishment. It led to the radicalization of the civil rights struggle and once it picked up a gun, the powers that be knew exactly how to deal with it. They did not know how to deal with King or any other non-violent activist. Ghandi completely defeated the English and sent them packing out of India by basically sitting down and refusing to play their game.
