    Filling out job applications

So I guess Im going to get fired soon. I am starting to look for a new job, Im looking for part time while I finally try and finish school. I was at my current job for almost 4 years so I probably will have to include it in work history but do I put that I was fired? What about that portion where they ask if they can contact the employer?

Yeah, you kinda have to say you were fired, especially if they ask for the reason you left. It's not like you quit, and the company didn't go under either, so if you say something other than fired and they find out that's really bad. Lying on an application = bad.

They may ask then under what circumstances you were terminated, just sugar coat it but tell the truth. Don't lie but don't necessarily give them all the information either.

You don't need to allow them to contact your old employer. As far as they know your old employer has a grudge against you and wouldn't give you a good recommendation. Basically all they can ask the ex-employer though is if you were a good worker and if they would hire you again considering that. I'd just say no.

I went through the same thing in December :D

Are you getting fired for fucking up or are they just laying you off because they dont need you any more???

If you get laid off then no biggie tell them you got laid off. If you get fired then sugar coat it the best you can ad move on.

I got fired. Going through some personal stuff so my job ethics have been slipping. Nice reality check though I guess. So it is time to move on. Thanks for the insight, I guess the search begins.

I just need something to pay some bills and live. Still at home, but I feel bad for the people with familes and house payments etc. Guess its time to take school seriously and finally get somewhere. Atleast I don't have to wake up at 4 in the morning after studying till midnight anymore. Damnit I knew I shoulda paid off some bills with my tax refund but it was so much more fun blowing it all on the car. Younger people don't really have their priorities straight.

I wouldn't worry too much about it if you do get fired. Mrsleeve is right on, just be truthful but make it work in your favor the best you can. Most employers aren't going to elaborate at all when called about a former employee, there is too much room for legal action these days. They usually just say you were terminated, how long you worked there and your title while there.

I'd be tempted to have a older friend or uncle call your old working asking for a job reference for you to see what kind of smack they are going to say.

Nothing illegal about that, that's just doing your home work. You'll be in a much better place to know how you will "sugar coat" the firing if you don't know.
