Ha, we get like 15-16 bucks for a scrap aluminum wheel.

These bastards have been known around here to go under someones house, while the homeowners are at work, and rob every damn piece of copper plumbing pipes out from under it.
What they do around here is go into and under houses that are under construction, and chop out all the wiring. Then they take it and drag it behind cars down dirt roads, or run it over several times, to make it look like it's old and used, not brand new.

That's a little more reasonable than the 15-16 bucks a pound you quoted earlier in this thread. If that were true I could make a grand on bottlecaps.

                              Pics of your momz???

                              ;)

                              To the OP:
Seriously, WTF did you think you'd get for 102 lbs of steel??? $12 is pretty damn good for something you'd otherwise throw in the dumpster.

There are guys who make $$$ selling scrap steel- but they don't do it 102 lbs at a time. More like 10,000 lbs (or more) at a time. Consider yourself lucky- if you had taken that 102 lb load in 2-3 years ago, you'd have gotten about $2-3 for it.

Around here, scrap cars are worth $8-10 per 100#, which is as high as it's been in a while. I took a couple of scrap cars in a while ago and was happy to get $5 per 100#.

Now, if you can get a flatbed 18 wheeler load of scrap cars together at one time, you can get probably $15-17 per 100 lbs right now. All the junkyards are buying cars one at a time, and then crushing the crappy ones and sending them straight to the large metal recycler that's 15 miles down the road where they pay $$ for full loads. That place will buy cars one or two at a time also, but they pay the same as the junkyard- so it's not worth it to haul the extra miles.

BMW radiators are a decent source of scrap $$$, take a large hammer and bust off the plastic end caps and pull the rubber o-rings off the ends and you have a higher grade of scrap aluminum. Wheels are OK too- especially bent or crappy bottlecaps or those damn TRX wheels.

                              Bret.
